Nintendo Switch OLED review: Great, but is it a must-buy?

My original day one switch was on its way out. Got the oled. Didn’t regret it.

Just brought one yesterday and love it!!

If you own the original switch I’d say it’s still worth the upgrade simply due to the better battery

The Ethernet port is all but pointless. Performance is actually worse than on WiFi with a bandwidth limit if 75mbit due to the usb 2.0 interfaces.

The oled is not brighter…. It’s actually a bit dimmer. It is the massive increase in contrast that gives the impression of a brighter screen.

I would never a buy a Switch OLED because my family isn’t rich

What a messy review. Battery life in the V2 and Oled hasn’t improved because of a larger battery, but because of a more efficient processor. The Switch Oled isn’t exactly the same size as previous models, it’s 3 millimeters wider. If the kickstand breaks you don’t have to send it to Nintendo’s repair center, in a few months you’ll be able to just order a third-party backplate with kickstand and replace it yourself.

Nintendo has been releasing upgrades and revisions of their handheld consoles since forever. Doesn’t it make more sense to compare this Oled Model with the GBA SP, DSi, DS Lite, 3DS XL, 2DS XL, anything really instead of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X?

They it doesn’t have more power yet smash starts 6 sec faster on the oled compared to the v1 switch

Great review, thanks alot. I was able to trade in my old Switch for $300 at GameStop and on Friday I picked up the new Switch OLED for $150(the difference in price).
I love the screen, I played it outside for an hour and it was so vivid and bright, no need to use 100% brightness, I used 60%. The kickstand is great. Having the ethernet port came in handy as I needed to download my game library. Wired is 2x as fast as wi-fi. It is so much more enjoyable to play. Thanks for your review.

Coming from V2 Switch, I can say it is so damn worth the upgrade. That big screen and the nicer audio really did it for me. One thing I noticed about the kickstand was I never used it before, but after using the tabletop mode on OLED it actually is functional now. Worth it for me!

Traded in my V1 switch for this and it was WORTH it

I believe that is not a speaker, the speakers are at the front edge. That is the open for the fan!

If you use a OLED TV then the OLED Switch is perfect as you get to play on OLED no matter whether your docked/undocked.

I couldn't get the white one today I settled for the neon one.

I am going to buy the oled switch.

The OLED screen is definitely enough to make me upgrade from my V2 Switch. You can sell your older one and buy this easy. I hate the screen of the older Switch. It makes games look awful when playing handheld as I play. Yes, if you play only on TV you don’t need it but if you play handheld is MYST HAVE!

For anyone wanting to charge in tabletop mode, the official Nintendo stand accessory by Hori has notches that support running a charging cable through. It may defeat the purpose of that new kickstand but a potential solution if you find yourself in that specific scenario.

All I got say speak with your wallet if you want the OLED to be $300 as the current Switch with the same internal specs instead of $350. Nintendo will shift prices if it's not selling. The Skyward Sword (10 year old game) at Best Buy is now $40 now after 2 months being on the market at $60 back on July 16 2021. Nintendo fixed the launch Nintendo 3DS from $250 to $170 after few months.

If you have a launch Switch you don't have 5 hrs battery. You have 2.5 on full brightness. The v2 model nearly doubled battery, and this goes about 10 minutes longer than that.

As other mentioned, OLED version is not same size. It is wider.
Speakers are not placed on the rear but front of the switch’ toward the bottom edge. And lastly, has anyone ever removed their SD card while opening the kickstand?

The OLED is 3mm wider than the original Switch, so some accessories with a tighter fit won’t be compatible. Just a heads up :)

The USB C port has to be located at the bottom of the system in order to interact with the dock and “Switch” as the name implies.

The HD rumble or vibration feature is a function of the joycon itself, which has its own battery. Nintendo says that the battery life of joycon is approximately 20 hours, significantly longer than multiple full charges of the Switch hardware. Its highly unlikely that even the most intense application of the rumble feature, could impact the battery life of the console.

Just for clarification the speakers are on the front not the back!

The OLED IS NOT the same width as the old model. The OLED is about 1 centimeter wider. This is only an issue for accessories that require a tight fight like grips.

now i can turn my switch background to dark mode coz' on the original was awful, sort of like grayish black. I was always using the white background back then! the blacks on oled model is perfect!!!

This is the Switch Semi-Pro. Which I'm picking up soon haha.

If you have the original launch nintendo i think this is a reasonable upgrade.
