Is there such thing as a good smart or electronic lock? I'm very wary about them. I'd never trust a smart lock, because who says they can't just be hacked, or your credentials stolen.

Add a bevel to that wall of the actuator and the exploit becomes much more difficult, if not impossible.

Thank you for your educational and security awareness content. I have been avoiding going wireless at home for other reasons and this just fortifies my reasoning. Guess still the best option is to have a couple of high-end locks just so it would take longer for the intruders to get in.

Its not a design flaw. Its there incase a battery dies and the motor stops working. The security flaw is the internet.

They also make for expensive replacements when they fail. I’ve seen it twice in the field personally. When you have to replace the unit outright on a dud or short circuit, and they cost that much, is it really worth the supposed convenience over a simple master key?

Edit: to be fair, only one was this Schlage product, the other was a similar Yale design.

I had this exact lock on my old apartment and it died on me one time and I couldn’t get back into my apartment where everything was. Had to call maintenance and found out that 9v battery presses up against those silver circles at the bottom which will give enough power to register the fob and unlock it. Was definitely a stressful situation considering I was on the 4th floor and there literally was only the locked door for access in and out

I'd say that 'flaw' was an intentionally designed way to open the lock. The slant in the casting is too conveniently positioned to be an accident. There's probably even an official tool for the job.

Not flaw, it's by design, the hole is even angled / / towards the exploit.

To think that one little hole on the bottom just neutralizes the effectiveness of an entirely otherwise un-pickable lock.

Unbelievable! I've been watching your videos for a while now. But it never ceases to amaze me how you can get away with such fluidity errors for years. You could have discovered something like this before the product was launched, or at least corrected it over time. Why don't they test their own locks?!!!

For anyone who finds Schlage reckless, I got some "interesting" looks when I testified to an ALJ panel of a public utility regulatory commission, and pointed out specifics of FERC rules for electric utilities and grid management Interconnects that made informed public criticism of rate increase proposals or new facilities applications hard, but amounted to security theater and not valid security, as to their legislative justification.

Considering it took more time unscrewing the thing with a power tool, maybe the lock should have just had a bunch of screws on the front, to make people think "Ah this lock is easy to mess with, all I gotta do is unscrew these, I can't believe they didn't even hide the screws" but it turns out that it wastes more time for an attacker to be seen trying to bust a lock open than it is to pick locks like these normally.
