How to do a double crochet stitch (dc) - step-by-step tutorial

Okay, I get the general idea and I can do the stitch but what confuses me is the placement of the stitch. So to start off I chained 15 and then began the video to learn the double crochet stitch. I expected to need 15 DC to match up with the rest of the chain but only did about 10 DC before I ran out of chain stitches. Does this just mean that I did it in the wrong opening? or is it normal to need less double crochets than single or chain stitches?

What kind of yarn is this? I always see it in videos but never found any like this before

Turns out I was yarning UNDER instead of OVER and couldn't figure out why my loops were so tight!
