Where the heck do you fit a Taiwanese rum into a review flight? If you're like me, you delay a few years and fit it into a series of single reviews like this, and as we come into the last week of dieting I was _super_ excited to taste out this one. Renaissance is a very new distillery in the south of Taiwan, focused on long fermentation, pot distillation, and the use of local cane (you can read more of their story at
https://88bamboo.co/blogs/whisky-rum-gin-vodka-distillery-spotlight/taiwan-is-not-known-for-its-rums-renaissance-is-about-to-change-that ). So let's taste some out:
- Renaissance Distillery "White Alligator" 2018 3 Year Old Single Rum, Cask No. 18257 (Taiwan; local molasses fermented 15 days with dunder, pot distilled, and aged in a heavily charred American oak cask; 64.8% ABV), 86+/100
In some ways this is what I wish Appleton Hearts (last reviewed at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWFvq3kek10 ) was more like: a woody-but-not-too-woody, estery-but-lower-ester pot still rum. It's really well made and it's delicious. Now, it's not much cheaper than Hearts, mind... but you can't have everything.
