Apple M1 for Music Production ?!? - Speed & Compatibility Test

We are more than a year and maybe only 30% of developers made their plugins M1 Compatible..incredible!

I have my m1 mini for music production in ableton, base model 8gb and 256ssd, so fast. 👌 I got it September 2021, so waited for plugs to be updated.

Hey, it's more than half a year later and I'm curious...how about the third-party pluggings now? Anyone who can give me an update/advice? Cause I think about buying the M1 air or pro 2020.

I rather go with windows pc which I can upgrade more and more and all the third party plugins and vsts works very well............but, impressed with the M1 performance🤞🏼

It’s been a struggle with drivers since I remember. I dad old roland keyboards and i had to sell all of them due to incompatibility with windows 10. Now i want a mac and this happens.... WE MUSIC PRODUCERS EXIST !!!

i get flawless logic pro performance with my macbook air m1 256gb 8gb ram version 7 core gpu version and not only logic pro but on every software whether for audio or for video....m stunned !!

My macbook air isnt recognizing my piano keyboard (which is basically quite old, yamaha PSRE413).
Any suggestions how could i get this fix or should i buy a newer keyboard?

I bought a MacBook as my first actual laptop back when they first introduced the intel cpus. I used it until it got stolen a couple years later. I liked the aesthetic and I’m also a musician. When I learned how much better pc actually was, I switched back to pc and started building PCs again. Now that I’m interested in the idea of building my own home studio I’m thinking I might switch back. I tried to switch back a few years ago with a MacBook Pro but it gave me so many problems that I sold it. I would build a hackintosh but it seems Apple found the perfect solution to stop that. We will never be able to update to current OS X on hackintosh ever again unless someone figures out how to trick the os into working with an emulated arm cpu, or with a 3rd party arm cpu. Though i would bet money on someone figuring something out. That ends my rambling pointless comment.

What about connecting usb audio interfaces and usb midi keyboards, via the hubs. Does that work well... since the M1 has just two ports there is no choice right. Anyone?

How did you manually enable Neutron/Nectar 3? I checked them in the plug-in-manager and they still wouldn’t open.

I’m confused. I recently watched a video where you said the entry level M1 Air WAS able to handle professional music production. I believe it was in the one DAW to rule them all video. Did something change in those two weeks to change your mind?

Even though Pro and Air share the same M1 chips, Air does not have a cooling fan. When the CPU is under heavier load, it starts to slow down. M1 Pro would be more appropriate comparison to the Intel Pro version.

does anyone have a recommendation for me? I make music with a lot of tracks and plugins. Currently using an older macbook pro but it can't handle it. I run out of ableton. Not sure if the mac mini would be good or if I should get the M1macpro 13 inch or what? If I should wait on the M1 then I'm not sure what I should do in the meantime because I need something that can handle my music asap.

Did you try any Waves plugs or SG driver?

I have yet to max out my old Mac Pro with Logic, and the M1 Air benchmarks twice as high as said Mac Pro. I think the Air will be fine for me.

I am planning on buying the MacBook Pro with the new chip (16gb RAM). My only complaint however is that there are only 2 USB-ports. I need at least 3 USB ports for my audio unit/mixer, charging, and all my gear. Will this problem be solved if I buy a good USB-port? Because the USB-port I am using right now does not let me hook op my audio unit/mixer (it doesn't recognize it), therefore I can only use the main USB-port for it to recognize it.
