The first step is to examine the purpose of the study to decide what degree of precision is required. After this, we must define the population and decide a suitable sampling frame. We next determine the procedure: how the sampling takes place. The procedure may use probability or non-probability methods. Probability methods include simple random, systematic, stratified random and cluster sampling. Non-probability methods include quota, judgement, convenience and snowballing sampling. The combinations mean we have a vast number of options. The sample size is generally agreed before undertaking fieldwork, but, in some projects, it may be determined after it has started. Any sampling shortfalls should be identified and corrected at the publication stage. http://www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk/orc/bradley2e
