ОтветитьI've driven both back to back. The steering in the new one is much more precise. The engine has WAY more urgency to it.
The rear end feels more compliant in the new one.

ОтветитьA little stats. Measured by the German sports car bible Sport Auto: Weight: 981 GT4 1379 kg, 982 GT4 1449 kg/1457 kg and the PDK version 1481 kg. Torque: 981 GT4: 449 Nm. 982 GT4: 396 Nm. Night and day. Yes, at Nurburgring the 982 is faster, but in a track with tighter bends the 981 would be a tad quicker. Oh, and the HP figures: 981 GT4 hit exactly the promised 385 hp and the 982 falls short of the promised 420 hp with measured 413 HP. Interestingly the 981 Boxster Spyder came out with 378 HP and 1339 kg. That's full 142 kg less than a 982 GT4 with the PDK. All weights measured with full tank of petrol/gas.

ОтветитьI'm not sure why these 2 cars are being compared. It's clear as day the 718 is superior to the 981. Theirs something from the 718 missing that should be standard in the gt4 like premium audio, pushbutton start, shouldn't be a cost difference if you Want the auto or manual, led headlights as well as illuminated door sills should be standard and info infotainment should come at least with Android auto and Apple car play as standard. But the more surprising question is how 981 owners think their cars are worth 100k in the 2nd hand market with the 718 starting at less than 100k and being less than 130 fully optioned out. The 981 is a lesser car with a lesser motor all around. Should be 50-60k at this point used.

ОтветитьThe problem with the 981 is it has a inferior 3.8 with nothing up top. The 4.0 is in another league.
ОтветитьSo, let me get this straight. Porsche makes a GT4 in 2015. 4-5 years go by & the reintroduction has few if any improvements? I’ve been around long enough to know that any 911 built 1 to 5 years before the 911 dogs of 1975, 1976, and 1977 makes anything possible

ОтветитьIn the end, the 981 still looks better than the 718 IMO, and if you're going to lay out a lot of dosh on a car, how it looks matters.

Torn!! Great review, to the degree that I am soooo torn! The price difference makes the 981 so much more attractable, and your review makes it sound as if it's for me. But it's old, and I am worried about the depreciation (flip) in a few years. Which will be more sort after in the future??? Back to your review; honest, precise and to the point. Thank You. What would you buy?? Seriously. ( I am a driver not a commuter!)
ОтветитьIf you don’t believe me watch Steve Sutcliffe’s review of 718 GT4 at Knockhill. Best auto journalist bar none. Watch him drive Formula 1 car at Silverstone. His time is .4 sec behind test driver’s (if I remember correctly). Passionate, knowledgeable, skillful, observant. He’s the authority.
ОтветитьI’ve driven them both. SMSA certified. Disagree with him completely. Live in GA, USA, and there’s a road that is the ultimate challenge. Don’t tell me that the 718 version isn’t precise. I think if you own a 981 you like it; you own a 718 you like it. I have an early Cayman with hydraulic steering BTW and the 718 GT4 matches it. What a great combo. And seating position? Stay away from the bucket seats: they’re idiotic.

ОтветитьOur presenter seems to forget to mention that the 1st gen had no optional PDK & and the aero was at least 50% less than the 718 GT4. We buy these cars for track use, both the PDK & aero make this car go quicker on the track. If we want these car for street driving, stick with the GTS please!
ОтветитьSports bucket seats on the 718 are un-reclinable so keeps you more upright by default. If you want more adjustment you need to ditch the buckets

ОтветитьSorry but this review has too much useful and is lacking a drag race on an air strip, doughnuts to warm up the tyres and a fat guy who can’t change gear properly complaining about lag or something.

This car was disappointingly not improved enough to change from my 981 GT4, but - if the GT4RS is as good as I hope and not ridiculously priced, that could be a different story.
