Pekiti Tirsia Kali Instructor Logan Lo breaks down the famous pen kali scene between Matt Damon and Nicky Naudé.

What makes this scene memorable among kali martial arts practitioner is:

1) Matt Damon specifically trained in the Filipino Martial Art Kali for the movie. Krav Maga is widely mistaken as being used in this film. It is not, as Matt Damon was trained by Kali/Jeet Kune Do expert Jeff Imada. The film's uncredited fight coordinators are Damon Caro and Jonathan Eusebio. Both are trained in Kali and Jeet Kune Do and neither are trained in the Krav Maga.

Here are the time-codes of each fight breakdown:

An interesting thing I noted is that there's a lot of Karate -Kali crossover. In my Karate class we even did some Kali drills with sticks, and some similar flow drills with empty hands.

They both drop their hands because they are both tired and afraid in that moment. It's a psychological break between the 2........ I've had this mutual breathing moment in boxing. Where both fighters . For a split second... agree to sit tight. It's non verbal. But then training seems to kick in at the same time for both attackers.... if you look at wildlife.. they will also have this moment of "relating" sometimes... and then go right back to war after a quick breather. If you've ever fought your beat friends before.... you can relate to this. I think it's human nature and the movie was trying to show how similar these two hitment are in the way they just "go go go" no mater what they are feeling. And have 1 little slight moment of "oh shit, should I be doing this?"

Favorite way to do a rear naked choke is putting the guy in a body triangle squeeze with my legs and pull and squeeze with my arms bending his body backwards as I squeeze his abdominal wall with my legs and choke him at the same time cutting off even more air. Tap or pass out

Question, with that standing armbar would it have been better for Jason to have grabbed the arm like he did and then dropped his weight down to bring the assassin to the ground to get better control from there??

I would like to add a point about ground work, I did a combat style/ form of Jui jitsu and to be honest grappling, chokes, and holds, played a key Ingradient of the sylibus, and if your oponant is for any reason better than you with chokes your finished, my instructor who was ex Brit army said you have seconds, cos he got me into a position that...
Well was hideous and I couldn't do much.. Point is he knew how to use is body weight (not strength) in his favour against me... I couldn't do a thing..

Can pens be used as weapons? Hell yeah !!! It was way long back when I was very young kid and used to fight with my sister basically couple of times a day. Once she was so much annoyed with me that she just literally threw an open pen at me. I reacted because of my instinct, tried to stop the pen with my hands. And guess what happened? The pen stabbed into my pinky finger and stuck there like a dart. I had to pull it out in awe. And did it hurt? I will leave that up to your imaginations.

@theoneandonly3435 - 09.12.2021 16:26

if i had to use one instead of a "classic" knife i would always take a pushdagger in my lead hand for enhancing my jab harassing his eyes and hands. pls take a pushdagger and hit a melon full force youll notice that these weapons are harrassment weapons as a full power punch is gonna hurt yourself and you risk bad edge/point alignment. for example if your opponent wears sturdy clothing like a leather jacket or even protection (biker protectors in the jacket or in a military setting even a tactical west) hitting full force while not aligning the point in 90° you more likely slide up pushing the metal between your fingers up and wont do incapacitating damage. and even if you kill or incapacitate your opponent with several powerful blows ignoring that youre hurting your hand, you cant say there isnt a second attacker and now you gotta fight the next one while being injured. even brass knuckels who seperate the force on all fingergaps are more meant for punching less powerful (because its still like a full power strike for your opponent as the striking force is more concentrated) and therefore faster, cutting into the face of your opponent.

Yes u always use ur off hand with a push dagger and it will help you with multiple things such as being able to grip it better and tighter multiple jabs multiple places and if ur trying to retain your iron this blade can't be beat and plz stop putting it between your middle and ring fingers should be trigger and middle fingers considering those are the two knuckles you want to hit with

I think it is worth noting that Bourne didn’t want to kill his assailant because he hadn’t regained his memory and was desperate for any information the attacker could potentially provide. That could be a plausible explanation for his choice of targets with the pen.

One of the things to keep in mind is he doesn't want to necessarily end the fight and stab in the neck and such as he is wanting to extract information out of him.

I think we have to approach this scene by keeping in mind Jason's mission with his opponent. He wants to get information from him, not kill him. We know this is Jason's intent because he doesn't kill him, rather, he interrigates him. So, keeping this in mind there may have been more effective ways to nuetrilize his opponent more effectively to gain information from him. With that said, you guys are awesome.

late to the game, if you watch the movie, Bourne is trying to keep him alive so that he can interrogate him. Might change some of the context can change the legitimacy of some of his strikes and placement.
