► In this video we're looking at early photography in Japan and collection of fascinating 19th century photos of old Japan, hand coloured by photographer Suzuki Shinichi, HD enhanced, color restored and brought to life using latest digital technology.
► In the nineteenth century, Japan experienced a transition from an Edo-period and isolationist society to an imperial one, the Meiji-era, which gradually opened doors to foreign trade, western travellers, and technologies. This provided an opportunity for early photographers such as Felice Beato and others to introduce photography to Japan. This led to individuals like Shimooka Renjo to be amongst the first Japanese to undertake photography professionally. In 1862, he established one of the country's first photographic studios in Yokohama. He also mentored a number of pioneering students, including Usui Shusaburo, Esaki Reiji, and Suzuki Shinichi I and II.

Between 1872 and 1873, Suzuki Shinichi I was commissioned by J. R. Black, publisher of "The Far East" magazine, to create a photographic series documenting Japanese life and culture. In November 1873 Suzuki set up his own studio in Yokohama, producing portraits and souvenir albums. Albums that were produced by the Suzuki Shinichi Studio, helped in the preservation of images of old Japan before it succumbed to new modern ways of life, and distributed them around the world.

In recent years, museums such as The Metropolitan and The Getty have made digital collections of photographs by Suzuki Shinichi available to the public. We've chosen a few of these images for today's video. What is strikingly beautiful about these photos is that they are delicately hand-coloured, making them stand out from standard black and white photos of the time. We'll see samples in this video in their original format, then apply quick enhancements, colour restoration, and, where possible, facial animations to take this presentation to the next level.
