J Bay Explodes Biggest Swell in History!!

We surfed the place in 1968 when there was nothing there but a dusty caravan camp and had a 20 foot day but without the terrible wind in this video. It was the best wave I’ve ever ridden anywhere on earth. Sean Tompson and his brother Michael were there for practice before he became world famous and he was shredding these giant gnarly barrels right in front of the rocks and making it look effortless. He never wiped out not even once which is a good thing because that far up the break a wipeout would blast you right into the rocks.

Great group of guys, the kindness, loving the surf together. And showing us older folk, you just keep going and looking for the big ones, no one having to be the greatest - you are all amazing.

I was out at j Bay when it was that big ...and I got hammered. But I walked down the beach a little ways and surfed albatross and had the most amazing surf session of my life.
