Remember that tune as an 11 year boy. Was creepy but a great song. R.I.P ,Gordon.
ОтветитьI used to hear this song on the radio as a little girl and it always sparked my imagination. Although in my mind the Edmund Fitzgerald was one of those sailing ships with tall masts all that, I always love this song. One day in summer school why I was in high school, we took a week-long camping trip through Minnesota. One of the stops we took was at Duluth Minnesota right at the mouth of the Great Lakes Superior and it was at a maritime museum there that I seen the model of the ship as it looks on the bottom of superior. It told me I needed to learn more. So I did I started reading up everything I could on it including the wonderful book Gales or November by Robert J Hennings I believe. This song is always been very magical to me

I read a few years ago that they'd stopped ringing the bell in the Maritime Sailor's Cathedral for some reason. How disrispectful !!

ОтветитьGreat Lakes shipping is a HUGE component of what sustains both the US and the Canadian economy. There are faster ways to move materials, but if you have to move tons and tons of stuff water transport is the most efficient, hands down. And yet, unless you work in the shipping industry there's hardly a reason to think about how all that freight gets where it needs to go. Or how dangerous getting it there can become in bad weather. It took a doomed voyage, and Gordon Lightfoot's lyricism and sober delivery, to push that reality into public awareness for a time.
ОтветитьOhio / Michigan mid-west era had such tragedy in 1970s. This in 1975 and the Kent State shooting by the National Guard in Ohio in 1970, which lead to some VERY powerful songs.
