How To Install Cement Board Around A Bathtub- SIMPLE & EASY!

You are wrong sir, with all due respect. Backer board is Never to set above the tub flange as it can leak behind the wall. Instead you need to either notch the stud to allow the flange to set into the wall as to let the Backer overhang the flange or use furring strips to allow the Backer board set over the flange. Never let the Board set on the tub it should be spaced 1/4 inch above flat part of the tub and filled with Kitchen and Bath Silicone to seal then you can tile it. Also seal the corners with atleast silicone but preferred to tape the corners with mesh tape and Thinset. But DO NOT install Backer Board above the tub flange period. I also put thick Mil plastic under the backer first and let it over hand the tub flange as well for Extra protection. God bless and have a great day. backer board is supposed to sit 1/4" above the tub lip, not fully above it. You will get water in the wall if you do it the way he shows.

I’ve gotten a lot of mixed reviews on where the backer board sits on the tub. Seems a lot of people do it this way, but have ran into a lot that say not to and that your really supposed to shim your studs whatever the thickness the flange of your tub is so the backer slides right over the flange and on top of the tub rather than on top of the flange. Use spacers to leave a small gap between the tub and bottom of backer board. Then seal the gap between tub and board. This creates a stronger wall and allows materials to expand and contract easier where damage would occur if expanding happens with the board on top of the flange.
