Food emergency in Argentina | Voice Of The Global South

Argentina is one of the biggest beef eating countries in the world but people there are turning to cheaper meats and a vegetable diet comprising pasta as incomes fall and inflation rises. Argentina's President Javier Milei has announced some drastic austerity measures to check runaway inflation. He calls it a shock therapy to salvage the country's economy. Even community soup-kitchens are facing shutdowns and cuts in funds. Years of recessions and high inflation in the resource-rich South American nation have left over half the population in poverty, including around seven in 10 children. Malnutrition is on the increase and doctors are treating children for scurvy linked to a vitamin-deficient diet. Such is the situation that some people are having to scavenge for food.
