Capitalism and imperialism destroyed the USSR from my limited observations. I mean, they destroy, subvert, rape and murder everything and everyone. And given the super rich class that evolved in Russia after Perasytroika, it makes sense to me. Don't get me wrong... I'm sure capitalism has some redeeming qualities. I don't know what they are, but it's possible they might have some.

The USSR could have been a great leap forward for humanity in terms of both scientific and social progress. Unfortunately it began in the ruins of the Russian Empire. Not a great foundation for building an entirely new type of civilization.

Gorbachev and the Soviet people wanted the USSR preserved, Gorbachev was a true socialist and communist and merely cared for the Soviet people.

I don't know if it was an overexaggeration or a witty comment on the situation with the comment of "85% support Putin and soon will be 120%".
Gorbachev is the most amusing person to listen to when he criticises the current leadership, he always mentions the obvious things like corruption, authoritarianism, centered power etc. But he always emphasises the importance of this leadership and the importance of the people's opinion for this leadership.

The good things Gorbachev brought back to Russia: hunger, unemployment, an oligarchy, diseases, inflation, crime, poverty, and Pizza Hut. 😉

This man himself caused the collapse of the Soviet Union. He talks like he was some hero who saved the USSR from an inevitable catastrophic civil war…when he was the individual responsible for weakening the central authority to the point that various coalitions armed with nuclear weapons could battle for political power. Imagine you leave your baby on a train track, wait for a train to come, and then save it from being run over at the last second…that doesn’t make you a hero. It makes you negligent idiot.

All these naive westerners think about gorbachev as of a ,,bright man who brought peace and love, a man that ended Cold war, but in post eastern block and especially Post Soviet countries we see him as of oppressive dictator that tries to keep his country together by force and killing unarmed civilians. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can look up such things like January events, The April 9 tragedy also known as tbilisi massacre, and other peacefull protest/freedom movements were taken down by force and in most of them unarmed civilians were killed by soviet troops. His intentions was not to bring freedom, he didn't bring freedom to any of his satelite countries and occupied countries we had to take it by ourself. That is why in the west you look at gorbachev as a hero and in post communist block we see gorbachev as a war criminal.
