Being a self aware npc looks like having autism feels like.
You know what's coming, you know your reaction is stupid and childish, you know people wouldn't bully you if you didn't show this reaction. But you just can't stop it. In fact, I get a splitting headache each time I dare to try. Like a programming I can't overcome.
Plus, the world is full of idiots, who find it funny to provoke your reaction for their entertainment.

I like to imagine Greg ran away because he didn't want to keep reacting.

This is exactly what Watch Dogs 2 NPCs do.
