How to FORCE Amazon Echo to Update to the latest Software Version

You could ask it to check for a firmware update and it forces it to update if it has an update

FOREVER UPDATING LOOP FIX ---------
If your Echo Dot is stuck in an Updating Loop forever, do this. ON the Roating Red Ring, press and hold MUTE and MINUS buttons down simultaneously for about 30 seconds until it says "Removing your SmartHome Devices" and then release them. Wait a bit and then when you press the Action button and your Echo will say "Now ready for Setup". Or you can unplug and plug it, and it will play the new Welcome Tone and saying your device "Is now ready for setup, go to the Alexa App".

Go to the Alexa App and chose the bottom right icon for Settings and then chose "Add New Device" and chose "Echo Dot". You'll see it listed if detected via Bluetooth... pick it... and then pick your Wifi Hotspot for it to connect to as you've been through before.

Tada... your Echo is back, but the WAKE Word has been reset to "Alexa" so you'll have to change it back to whatever you prefer, i.e. "Alexa, change my Wake Word to Echo/Computer/Amazon/Ziggy/Alexa"...

This will last until the next Power Outage / Power Cycling of your Alexa at which point the dmmnn thing will try to update again and get stuck in the update loop like it did before. Still, you can at least bring it back from the dead until then.

Alexa customer services told me to do this just now after it lost connection to the WiFi and couldn't get it back. How is it going to update the version without a connection to the Internet through my WiFi? I did repeatedly ask the customer service rep but they didn't really give me an answer and just started accusing me of not cooperating. 😳😂 They'll be calling me back in a couple of hours.

She will then ask you if you want to update, and it will take 30 minutes.

Or just say: Alexa, check for software updates.

Is it available in the Echo 4th gen? I have some issues with the device, Alexa is not responding as it should be. I tried holding the mute mick button for many seconds but it didn’t work, I don’t know if a replacement could be a better choice, because the factory resets don’t solve those issues

I dig the Echo devices, but the fact you can't just say, "Alexa, update firmware," is just so insanely asinine! How in the world would having that feature be a negative?? And if you were already up to date, it could just say, "Your Echo is up to date," or something thereabouts. Geez...

This no longer works. But, it could be that it's up to date. Mined doesn't say it needs a firmware update. The only problem I'm having with my Echo and my 3 dots, is that even though I have my spotify account linked with my amazon, it won't play any music and says it needs a software update, but when I tell it to update, it says it's unavailable to do so. Spotify used to work on all 3 dots. I just got the regular echo today. It plays music from all the other music services fine though.

Any ideas if I can schedule when Alexa does software updates? Im on a metered ISP and both my devices updated yesterday using 2 gig of data!

Didn’t work at all. Two ours later, dot is still muted and red.

Can someone please tell me how to make echo play music? It won't and never has without pausing or stuttering. I can't blue tooth music from my phone. I can't change default music player. Have I got to just change to Google.

I have mute the system and done everything it ask me to do and nothing. I have also deleted it and reinstall to my Alexa app and mute it and can’t get it to update echo system.

Why didn't you just ask alexa to check for software updates?

Lol... Essentially, if you don't want it to listen, all it has to do is "submit an update" and restart, and then it listens to you again?

Before you even try to do this you can ask Alexa "do you need an update? and she'll reply. I'm not sure if she'll initiate the update install.

I just got my amazon echo dot plus and ive been trying to use multiroom but it doesnt work and just un highlights the other amazon echo dot so you cant do it. I spoke to an advisor and he said my echo plus wasnt updated but its never said it needs an update. ive reinstalled it and everything but nothing seems to ever work ;-( i will leave it 48 hours and hope for the best

If you want to update your new or old echo, 3 simple steps: Under 5 minutes (depending on how fast you can set up the wifi):
1. Plug it in
2. Connect it to your Wifi
3. Restart (unplug and re-plug)

It automaticalled updates when it restarts (when already linked to wifi). The update occurs almost as fast at it takes to boot up normally. :)

you appear to have completely forgotten to mention that the Dot must be connected to one's internet before any of the updating can begin.That is my problem..I cannot get my Dot to link to my new Sky Q2 router no matter how hard I try to persuade it,thus I cannot even check my latest software via the Alexa app.,far less update it!! Might be the router of course so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place!
