in a nutshell as for me the differences between both faculties - always being the jurist now - are that physics constitute the case as mathematics constitute the tool with the help of which you can either pull off the subsumption with respect to already existing norms - the axioms - of physics or you can also set up new axioms by the development of theorems...
Le p'tit Daniel, mathematics is as abstract as it can be and it is as unanimous as it can be... ...iurisdiction in germany has some regulations to maintain this also as it is science and its implementation is science applied ( angewandte Wissenschaften... ...angewandte Rechtswissenschaften in this case ), and them fucking ( not the fourth integral of them I already segemented... ) germans will have to account for the great havoc they caused by intention, the blast of the terminus medius, the lies they do not stop to promulgate to conceal their actions and their deeds in ultravirulent illegitimaticity....
I am now Daniel3... ...and it doesn't mean much to me, I take it as a compliment, but I thank God, that I am still alive and able thus to marry, but you bastards will go to jail and be the wife of some given inmate... ...as things are my girl-friend and my angels in general and me, we will miss another christmas with us being together but with now three attempts to finish me off, I will pray to Junia and Jesus and God to express how thankful I am, that we will finally get together shortly after Christmas so we will have plenty of time under the shield of God, that provided for me coming so far anyway... ...I won't break but they will... ...so fuck you all you bastards of the civitas diaboli, you godless pieces of shit... ...you will go down soon and you will never ever again throw harm and my beloved ones and me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Feynman a lot, but saying that maths is pure rigour & just abstract reasoning with no intuitive feel for what we're doing is a gross overstatement, if not plain wrong
Actual mathematicians will almost unanimously tell you that they have a very visceral, down-to-earth sort of relationship with the objects they manipulate, very far from this image of pure, abstract & detached reasoning (which is lucky, because we wouldn't get very far otherwise)

His explaination is pretty degrading and misleading. Mathematics uses a lot of CONCRETE concepts for physicists like numbers which describe the physical world better than any sentence. Guess who worked out pi ? Mathematicians.

In short what mathematicians do is create a pattern which is what you'd call a formula. While, physicists understands and analyzes the geometry of the pattern to work it out. For eg, how you can phrase your chess patterns into real life problems.

The ways in which a mathematician and a physicist define mathematics will reveal what they are: A physicist will (usually) use the word "formulas" as a part of the definition. A true mathematcian will avoid doing that.

Mathematicians like to keep things as general as possible, which is good. But sometimes specificity really helps in understanding things intuitively, aiding ease of reasoning. Great point.

As neither a mathematician nor a physicist the line that most surprised me was the one about the general case and the special case.

Could Einstein have gotten to special relativity if he hadn’t first worked out general relativity? Are string theorists and others not exploring exactly a world made up of 10 or 11 dimensions?

I’m an absolute layman but it would seem a lot of great discoveries in physics, astronomy etc. came from taking a broader picture. Which precisely led to insights that go against your gut feel (e.g. the sun doesn’t revolve around the Earth, it’s the other way around)

Well also, sometimes physics can borrow from maths. And from there find out other things about physics.
I.e. you might realize "wait a minute, my physical system looks like it can be formulated through this mathematical concept." And then realize that the mathematical object you're using to describe you rsystem also has other properties which you can exploit, and verify if your system indeed possesses those other properties.

I disagree with Richard Feynman. Symbols, Language, and Pure reasoning are all you need. There is no "real world." What you call "the real world" is simply a set concepts. The "real world" is just language, symbols, you will never get to the real world. You can only get to the concepts. It's all language

No offense, but from my very biased mathematician perspective, my impression of physics is that its ultimate goal is to identify 1 mathematical model (the one that describes the universe), and that all it does currently is to carry out some calculations on some simplified (and sometimes slightly inconsistent) versions of this model because the simplified versions exist and the sought one doesn't (at least yet, TBD if it ever will) or is too cumbersome. We all know these "simplified" versions are already extremely complicated and interesting, but I honestly never understood why physicists find calling some quantities in these mathematical models "force, mass, momentum" etc. etc. enlightening. I'm not saying it's not, it's just honestly beyond me and I hope one day I'll get it.
