With support from Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Business for Art Foundation / Hong Kong Arts Centre, local media / sound art pioneer makin fung bing fai, with his post-ambient music group [man.art.folk.hand] (aka endeavour852) ventures into a new experiment on media-fusion in a series of “concerts mediatronica”. Under this current project “unstable.media.lab : 3”, Choreographers, Writers, Visual and Sound Artists from Korea, Germany, UK and Hong Kong are invited to draw on their own imaginations around the theme of “Studies on Waters”, as represented by the Sung Dynasty Chinese painter Ma Yuan (1160 - 1225) in his scroll of 12 paintings of the same name. The results will be three “post-contemporary chamber music compositions” modulated by choreographic movements against motion / dynamic image projections and spatial installations.

Programme 01: Free Modulations (22/9 20:00)
Programme 02: Three Modulations (23/9 16:00)
Programme 03: corner_ONE_mod (25/9 16:00)

Modulation ONE: “Dissolve reFlow : The Bridge, The Rain and The Whale!”
(*Programme 1 & 2)

Against the melancholy of [m.a.f.h] ‘s post-ambient music specially composed for the event, Alice Ma will perform her original choreographic interpretation of Anne Lam’s latest short stories, “The Red Bridge”, “The Yellow Rain” and “The Blue Whale” inspired by “Studies on Waters” by Ma Yuan. At the same time visual artist Rachel IP will explore to extend her previous installation "dissolve flow # 01" into McAulay’s studio space as a visual equivalent of “furniture music” which echoes the “rippletronic” music technique devised by makin fung bing fai.

Modulation TWO: “Destruction Study ~~ Waters at an Exhibition”
(*Programme 1 & 2)

Contrary to Mussorgsky’s passionate approach to trans-media interpretation in his “Pictures at an Exhibition” (1874), [m.a.f.h] attempts to adopt a rather minimal approach to record the experience of a virtual gallery exhibition where visual artist Doreen Chan attempts to transform daily objects into notes for a spatial rhythm and symphony. Korean choreographer Ara Cho will engage in a“sound vs motion” dialogue with the interactive analog objects and sound generating devices.

Modulation THREE: "In Search of [...] Code of Undoing"
(*Programme 2 & 3)

Inspired by her previous collaborations with various improviser-musicians, London based visual artist Livia B. Garcia will create visual scores around the narrative of “finding a code to undo the damages to nature caused by human activities.” The scores will form the basis for unconventional musical interpretation by Berlin Sound Artist/ DJ RED Pig Flower. Emerging Korean choreographer Gayeung KIM and makin fung will collaborate to modulate / transform the scores and the resulting soundtracks with movement, language, projections and noises.
