Honoring and Praising a Nazi for fighting Russia in WW2 is Disgraceful

Everyone has jumped on the bandwagon without looking at the big picture. First, using the term "Nazi" without defining it is irresponsible: By strict definition, a card carrying member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party from the 1920's to mid-1940's was a Nazi. "Nazism" refers to the ideology that party was based on, and is linked to individuals and groups who supported said ideology. Unfortunately, dropping the term "nazi," capitalized or not, now undermines any possibility of unbiased discussion - from that point, facts don't matter.

Second, the Ukrainian veteran at the center of this issue would have been born in mid 1920's, and in the 1930's he would have been old enough to remember the "Holodomor." When up to 4 million of your countrymen die of hunger due to Soviet policies, it likely leaves an indelible impression on one's mind. When Ukraine became the battleground at the Eastern Front during WW2, this young man may have had the unenviable task to choose between two evils. It is conceivable that his decision to join the 1st Galician Division under the Waffen SS leadership was not based on ideology, but rather the means to defend his homeland against a known enemy, based on the best information available at the time.

Finally, Putin's enthusiastic pro-Jewish sentiments have to be put in historical perspective as well: The track record of Czarist Russia and the Soviet Union is not all that pure either. The anti-semitic "pogroms" in the 19th and 20th century are not mentioned by Putin, and conveniently not brought up by the mainstream media or all the LazyBoy warriors on social media.

Make no mistake: This event should never have happened in the Parliament, Trudeau has no redeeming qualities as a Prime Minister, and how the Canadian Parliament functions is an embarrassment. BUT, this 98-year old native Ukrainian's actions and associations at the time should be viewed and discussed objectively, and Putin's comments should be considered bearing in mind his own recent actions.

Trudeau ticks both those boxes.
