There have been multiple, openly and explicitly gay/lesbian/bi/ace characters shown in a positive light in animation for years.
yes they were more rare and didn't face the camera, wear a pride flag as a cape and say "I'm gay!" but marrying/kissing/having relations with a man or saying "My husband/boyfriend" is just as explicit, I would think.
They were still canonically gay and were clearly identifying themselves as such in a public way to both the audience and other characters.
