What if the fluid is just air? you can still get air trapped inside of pipes or tubes

Very useful man. I saw some man use a plastic bottle to lock the air behind the valve. and you can see it works very well. Water completly full of the tube . Make water flow very strong.

Where does it come from, where does it go? Why does air lock restrict fluid flow?

Sometimes what it seems to be a disadvantage, could be used as a tool or method for specific applications. I can give you one example, I am looking for a safe way to work in a specific section of a pipeline where I don't need to have product. This means that I will have to displace product and make sure that during the work, it does not return to the location where the work is going to happen. It is tricky as the elevation is playing on my behalf (Im working downstream and the pipeline comes from the lowest point). It is impossible to drain all the pipeline as it is very long so I have to calculate the safe volume to be displace upstream to make sure the work can be done. The losses can be calculated to predict the volume required to be displaced but I did not consider the Air Lock effect as a loss I can also use. This means that injecting gas in the high points upstream the location we want to intervine, will help us to reduce the risk. The only problem with this is to do a reliable calculation.

Has a disaster years ago with an air lock. The pipework was designed to enter the bottom but the ac radiators had no top vent. This wasn't realized until fill time came.
In discussion with the cooler manufacturer they said purge from the bottom..A simple aav at the top would have solved so many issues and saved days of extra work...worse the pipe contractor did a runner and left us to sort the mess
We did our best but there was still air in the system.
We set it running hoping to push the air out during the test runs.
All seemed well until the next morning a flange burst off. (ABS pipe) we assumed it was a contractor treading on the pipes. Replaced and run again
Next morning it happened again. The air lock c/w the inverter driven pump set up surging which caused the break.
3 dats of venting eventually got the air out and the issue never returned..
Heady days and stressful nights as this was part of the London Olympics canoe park and failure wasn't an option..
I still have nightmares about those days .

I like food waste. Food waste is a reminder that I worked hard for my door and that others cant have the extras because they didn’t work for it. Go freeload somewhere else, I hear california has many public services and they are doing great because of it.

I worked in a chemical plant and there we had similar traps that worked in the opposite way, to let fluids out of gas lines, called Gas Traps.

When I worked at a cement plant decades ago, the workers in the plant had a valve they called the magic valve. Here is how it worked. Limestone was dug up with a giant dragline at the quarry. It was dropped into a rock crusher that smashed it into small pieces that were mixed with water to make a slurry. The slurry was pumped about three quarters of a mile to a second booster pump that pumped it the rest of the way to the plant. Close to the booster pump was a valve, the magic valve. Occasionally the slurry would stop moving through the pipe and the fix was to open the magic valve which hissed and blew out air until liquid started spraying from it, then voila, like magic, the flow of slurry resumed. Since none of the workers had any idea what was happening, it was called the magic valve. LOL

We get rid of air locks by drawing a vacuum in the system to remove all of the air and then using the vacuum to draw back in the water.

I wish i knew this before i built my carwash. I would have a much better water flow. Sadly all the pipes are underground, under a thick layer of concrete and hard to reach

I have a water pump located directly under the tank. .
The water pump works normally when I water the trees in the garden,
but after a while I notice that there are air bubbles with the water coming out, and also the water hose vibrates and then settles and water and air come out.Can you explain .
thanks .❤️

I don't understand why air gets trapped in the bends.
The water is supposed to push the air and the water takes the place of the air .
Is there an explanation for that 🤔
thanks ❤️

EVERY TIME my underground tank runs out of water, the pump gets "air" in it. There is no way to know it for sure unless you climb on top of overhead tank and check if water is being pumped or not. The motor/pump is always at a rish of burning out and its very frustating to open pour water into the pump to "prime" it.... are there not pumps designed to pump water even if it dried out before ?

@PracticalEngineering could this happen on small scales say inside of a house? I've had weird issues where in my self-built RV. My pump is rated for 5 gallons a minute, but my hot water heater only ever sees 1.5 gallons a minute, no matter what I've tried. I've checked for all the other restrictions. I can't see anything else that would make it have a slower flow rate. Is this airlock phenomenon only on industrial scales?
