I had a different perception of the lyrics, but this is pretty cool.

If anyone is interested...I thought it was about the dad acting like a savior, but actually he's insufferable, overbearing, and narcissistic. Then either the child is so dependent and confused that he doesn't want to leave home after bringing out his father's destructive narcissism, or he threatens to leave home because of that transpiring. "Tell me, is your father a good man? It's surprising how little he seems to understand" I interpreted as "Is your father good? Because mine isn't." like a sort of detached vengeful attitude that rises to a climax later from the line "he doesn't seem to understand". Then the child is indecisive about leaving because of conflicting feelings, seeking freedom from it, but also having a broken stockholm syndrome. I didn't notice or distinguish a male and female lovers in the lyrcis' content, just one person representing anyone (he or she) who's suffering under such a parent. The tone and vibe of the music makes it sound like a detached broken mocking psycho child. (I didn't hear "his daughter" at all every time I listened to it, but when I did notice it I further made sense of it as the detached singing character's sister, the only salvation from his father). I also heard "Oh dad! You're just a child!", interpreting it as he gets possessive and explosive infantilely. But there you go.

to me the situation they are singing about could also be read in another way:
she says at one point that the boyfriend can be a little too invasive...sometimes relationships between couples can be toxic, and parents can realise before the daughter or son...
Imagine how helpless parents would feel in this situation: they want to protect their child from a toxic relationship, but the child feels hurt and feels like their freedom isn't being rexpected.
Human relationships are complicated, we must not simplify things and demonise parents before having put ourselvs in their shoes.

Ps.I also think it is always wrong and much too hurtful to kick one's daughter or son out of the house

Wow Sub just told my story exactly. And Aurora perfectly explains what I was trying to convey to my father but still in the end everything is my fault because they wouldn’t even try to understand. People are so stuck in society’s norm that I understand is hard to break away. Even as we get older people won’t admit it but subconsciously mostly everyone is scared of thinking for themselves out of society’s rules. Even atheists or people from the 90’s and so on you think you’re breaking away from the rules that are set around us but if you put one idea next to the other you think is radically different they are not. Since your seen as an adult you stop thinking outside of the box that used to confine you but it’s not anymore so now your basically one of them… a boomer.

This could have religious undertones too. This is exactly how I felt at times… my “father” was giving me an ultimatum… stop what I’m doing (innocently doing what I love and what makes me, me), or else I’ll be kicked out.. to hell. I chose to suffocate my true self for so long.. I developed a lot of mental disorders from this. It’s gotten to the point where its like… I gotta go.
