Thank you Larry - fascinating
ОтветитьEvery once in a while I watch this again. Gold.
ОтветитьThat story about the journal of a woman who traveled the world for 30 years... I don't think the problem was the topic... Any topic can be made interesting and valuable if you are able to relate it to actually important problems that people/the world cares about. Anything! If there be anything in those journals of that past that would help us explain the present and estimate the future... Or if she was some important figure or connected to key figures in history... Or if it's more of internally reflective journal, maybe it could contribute to the field of psychology... Seriously, didn't she find anything in 30 years worth of travel journals??? Travel is the best teacher, there must be something there... Makes me curious what garbage she instead came up with and how she failed to find the treasures in one person's history.
Anyway... perhaps the main point of failure was she started with no problem to solve, but just jumped to what she felt drawn interested to. Start with identifying a problem, then find the solution. I don't understand the need for an entire lecture to teach something so basic.
Geez, he's so negative... why brainwash students as if all the world is so dark and like everybody's heartless and won't care about people and only cares about money. I'd hate to have a professor like that, as it reflects his own values. People actually care, there are people who actually care to understand how others think, people always have questions in their heads silently waiting for answers or ideas, people also take time to think about matters outside of their profession. People are very interested in stories, almost any sort of story, even the same stories recycled. Maraming chismosa sa mundo hahaha biro lang. But what I mean is, It's not about science being too subject specific to pick people's interest, it's the way we are taught to write in a scientific manner... What if we start to learn how to tell our science experiments and results through stories?.... Or if we're talking about law writing, God damn how it has such elaborate nonsense and still endless loopholes, laws should be made simpler for everybody to be able to understand their rights, duties, rewards and consequences.
ОтветитьI disagree that we shouldn't be writing for a generic audience. It's time for science research to be made more relevant and understandable and appear to be valuable to a wider public audience. If we write just for the people who'd care in the particular subject of expertise, it would have low impact and slow down the delivery of science to actual applications that can be used for every day life. We should at least be writing to further collaborations across different fields of expertise. In the introduction and discussion part of the paper, we should be able to communicate the value of what we do making it relevant to typical human problems.
ОтветитьInformative
Ответитьbest performance
ОтветитьAmazing😅
ОтветитьExcellent lecture.
ОтветитьAmazing Lecture
ОтветитьI came to the conclusion that professors don't teach writing they grade or view writing in the contents of (what i call) "the culture of writing" know the culture of the teacher's culture or the person that is willing to read your stuff, then write in the written language of that culture and its sentence patterns and there will be a "better" acceptance of your work. Or better grade. Also my experience is (if the Teacher reads it) will pick on structure, syntax, logical order to justify grade points.
ОтветитьHe's GREAT
Ответитьshut up
ОтветитьInformative video.
ОтветитьWhat I absolutely LOVE about this fellows class....is his KNOWLEDGE and THOUGHT ABOUT field of knowing....of the outer realm....writers need to consider. Like a Sociological assessment of the environment your pitching to or aiming for. Just fantastic.
Ответить🧡🧡🧡
Ответить😊 arithmetic ... Learn it well
ОтветитьI have been looking so long for this concept. Thank you so much for sharing this with the public.
ОтветитьDo people value feelings, like fear!?
ОтветитьIs feeling good valuable?
ОтветитьAmazing session
ОтветитьFrom President Nixon stopped the gold from backing the dollar unless it's at the best interest of the American dollar. Enlightened to: know the code of your readers , write to change your reader's mind , keep thier attention when doing so, nobody care about your feelings or personal thoughts of thier community code , of this wonderful lecture .
ОтветитьThinking about using this model to write. Feel like I’m going to offend the scholars of my field.
ОтветитьTransformative
Ответить1) Massage your title into a click-bait headline
2) explain the title to your reader
3) explain who your reader is
4) tell your reader why they should care
how isn't this coercion?
hey man. great lecture. I'm studying for the GED and this video was recommended and I watched the whole thing. I dropped out of high school in grade 9 and have never written anything. so when he's like "forget everything you've learned" i was like "done". Watching as someone who has never written anything this was very interesting, Sadly you do need to know those rules and how they work before you can throw them out the window. I love the focus on value, you must convince the reader that this info is valuable to them and that is true in all aspects of life.
Ответить"The function of communication is the response you get"
Ответить##### TIME HAS RUN OUT !! John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Don't ignore this message !! REPENT NOW !! God the Son - JESUS came in the flesh to die for sinners. TRUST that God raised JESUS from the dead !! By FAITH accept JESUS's blood alone as payment for your sins unto Salvation, to escape what's about to happen !! Don't say you were not warned !! ONLY true believers in JESUS will be suddenly taken. THEN comes 7 horrific years of God's JUDGEMENT, poured out on the world. I pray that the LORD will open your eyes and heart to the GOSPEL.
ОтветитьI just stopped this thing to say WOW, WOW, WOW. Thank you from an ex-academic that did not understood this while was na academic.
ОтветитьAnyone have a reference for the writing he mentions on pg 16?

ОтветитьMany of us did not plan on spending 1.5 hours watching this video but he managed to suck us all in.
ОтветитьSir! I am doing my Writing and Editing Specialization from Coursera, and it gives your link to this lecture..How interesting your lecture is.. Respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
ОтветитьWords can't describe how incredible of a professor this man is and his bestowed teaching unto us. I hope many more people, particularly students, will find this gem. My sincerest gratitude to all authorities who decided to post this lecture on public media. 🙏💗
ОтветитьMike Dantonie
ОтветитьIts really funny how this guy the first half simply said "if they don't think its important its not importany" and I'm sure gender studies would have some issue with that but thankfully....
ОтветитьIt's been literally nine years and I am thrilled to listen this lecture. It is incredible, thank you.
ОтветитьArguing in favor of generative AI a decade early. Now, the opposite of what is getting taught here is how you don’t get replaced by a robot trained on what your readers want to read.
Ответитьwow, it's freaking 9 year ago, no wonder why the internet is full of crap LOL
Ответитьi operate in another style, if something important, my brain will remember it, if it's not, my brain will forget it, no need any writing whatsoever LOL
ОтветитьWho is this guy?
