Virtualbox boot from USB key

In this tutorial I show you one way to boot from a live USB key in Virtualbox.
As there is no simple inbuilt functionality to accomplish this, a third party boot manager is necessary.

The first step is to download a boot manger. The boot manager I use in this tutorial is called plopKexec written by Elmar Hanlhofer http://www.plop.at . plopKexec is specifically designed to boot linux USBs.
The current plopKexec version is 0.3. The Linux distro detection works currently only with distros that are using Syslinux.

Once you have a copy of plopKexec.iso the next step is to load it up with a VM. You can do this with a current VM but I prefer to set up a new VM with a minimalistic configuration for the sole purpose of booting USB devices.

The final step is to plug in your USB device and add a new USB filter from the device you wish to boot.

If you get an error like "Failed to access the USB subsystem" and subsequently don't get a list of USB devices currently plugged into your host computer, chances are you haven't installed the Virtualbox extension pack. Or haven't installed it properly. To fix this follow the instructions in the following tutorial:

if you do get a list all you have to do is select the USB device you want to boot from and boot up you virtual machine.

At this point the boot manager should locate your USB device and load the boot menu from it. All that is left is to select your choice from the list and wait for your VM to boot your USB drive.
