The fact that so many of you view Nathan as some sort of villain because of how he "treated" Ava and Kyoko is proof of the brilliant thought experiment that is this film. They are machines, but the veneer of an attractive woman is enough to fool Caleb (and apparently most of you) that they deserve compassion, sympathy, even rights. Imagine they looked like dishwashers instead, none of you would give a shit. Nathan was trying to explain that to Caleb throughout the film but he couldn't get passed appearances, and neither can y'all.

I really like the moment when just after Kyoko stabs Nathan in the back and he turns and looks around in shock she takes his face and draws his attention back onto her. I always took this as a sign that she had achieved some level of self-awareness herself and wanted him to see that it was indeed her taking this act upon him. She wanted him to know it was her.

People often think AI will achieve rapid advancement and immediately outstrip humans. And while that may be the case I think there is likely to be other cases of more limited and gradual advancements. Some other "models" (for lack of a better term) could possibly achieve varying levels of awareness and consciousness, and even struggle with the questions of who/what they are and their place in the world. They're won't be immediately genius level intellects, but quite ordinary ones with similar limitations that humans have.

Ava was the most advanced model. But perhaps Kyoto had achieved some level of consciousness as well even with her more limited tech, and questions of her place and relationship with the others had begun to arise within her. Her focusing Nathan's attention on her in that moment speaks to some desire within her for recognition from him for her act, or perhaps even as an actual entity greater than his attitude towards her.
