Fuel had to keep up with these panzers. Also, mechanical difficulties are guaranteed. I guess German logistics were exceptional.

barbarossa is one of the clearest examples of hubris in modern history. materiel is the basis of modern warfare. people say hitler understood this. i dont know why, every operation i learn of, shitty german logistics is part of the story. talk about being overstretched. these iron fisted dictators dont get that men, especially experienced men are your most valuable asset. they tell their generals to use their people for cannon fodder

we must remember the victims of the holocaust in the camps but there was a whole other holocaust of russian pows on the eastern front. especially following the encirclement in the Ukraine. horrible planning and savage racism doomed millions to starve and become infected to death.

Hitler lost ever battle unless he could do a Blitzkrieg. A fast constant moving attack in all directions at the exact same time.
The Channel stopped him from taking Britain. The Russian winter stopped his from taking Russia.
Europe was like cutting through
butter, a quick all guns blazing attack.
No barricades.
American military might won WW2.
Without America we would all be speaking German today.

Fascinating little documentary!
My Grandfather was infantry in the 6th army, he was captured at Stalingrad and endured many years of Russian captivity but eventually became one of the few to return back home in the 1950s.
His brother lived through the whole war, he was a loader for the Jagdtiger in the 512th heavy tank destroyer battalion where ultimately him and his unit was surrendered to the Americans May 1945

Its hard to know for sure what the average German general thought about the invasion. Im sure some thought itd be a huge mess, some likely felt the total operation was a great idea. However i know many of them hated the way Hitler ran it. Like for Blue, the summer offensive in southern Russia where hed divided his forces, one for the caucuses, the other for his biggest blunder Stalingrad. He an Franz Halder argued like mad over that. Or the previous year during barbarossa where he had Heinz double back to help take Kharkov which had held up an army group. That waated a few weeks and made it to where winter had totally arrived by the time they reached the outskirts of the capital.

Excellent series, but not true about Britain. Churchill was jubilant when Hitler invaded, because he was confident that Russia would prove to be a quagmire.

After almost 10 years of ww2 research, I will state. Without the lend lease act, USSR would retreat to the urals. "not saying they would give up" but stating that theyre ability to fight, would be haltet to such an extreme, that they would most certainly loose west/EU part of russia. Until reconquered, or surrender and peace agrement.

There were no Kalashnikovs in 1941 - nor in the entire WW2. Kalashnikov is a post-war design, so the German who states that the Russians had no problems firing their Kalashnikovs in the cold weather if totally full of shit.
