You're a brave man, Ray. None of the small shops near me will even touch these VWs. Speaks volumes about their repairability and reliability in the US.

The way I was taught, a "motor" is electric (think Tesla), and an ICE is an engine.

Engine: A motor incorporates an electric driver like a compressor.

An engine is always a type of motor, therefor can be called a motor. If there is no combustion, there is no engine. Electric cars have electric motors that are not engines.

Motor = no direct burning fuel for output, Engine = burning fuel for output, is how I was taught.
electric, air/oil pressure motor
steam (burning wood/coal..), gas, diesel engine

That 2.0 was such a gutless pile. If I remember correctly they switched to a timing chain and when it would go the cost was close to if not more than half the purchase price of the car.

As to the Engine / Motor nomenclature, I was told that Motor = electrical and Engine = Internal Combustion Engine. But I have heard knowledgeable people use them both ways. Myself, I prefer ICE as Engine and Electrical as Motor. As long as the parties are on the same page, it is okay. I'll always refer them as I noted.

General rule I go by
Engine = combustion process that consumes a fuel source to power it
Motor = powered by electricity, water, air pressure, vacuum source

"motor" became the catch-all for everything

Wow did not no they use the same type of oil cooler as in the golf mark 1. What i hate to see is someone putting spark plugs back in with out doing it by hand to start the threads! Ive had a lot of 2 stroke motors with mangled threads because they did not go in good and straight. They are easy to do by hand even after 30 years! you only have to use tools when it bottoms out by hand then its good just like you see Ray do in this video. I hate to see em use screws on plastic airfilter housing
did they expect that afret 15 years the screws still do theyr job after say 5 filter changes?

VWs are notorious for water pump failures, so they person more than likely let it run and overheated it and warped the head gasket... also, engine is IC. Motor is electric

2.0 is the most reliable motor in these vw's, simple engine with proper care itll last. Have several mk4's with 2.0 and they always make it to 200k for me. The motor will outlast most things on the car

I'm with you on the motor vs engine thing. My rc car has a motor, teslas have motors. Motors are powered by electricity. But I don't care that much if somebody else calls an engine a motor

When those wire boots kept breaking off, I think that's further evidence the car was run overheated... Looks like the rubber melted to the engine
