Somehow forgot to mention the Patriot intercepts of the Kinzhal. Sure, not the same, but also supposedly hypersonic. Puts the Russian claims into context. When the Russians speak, they lie. Worth keeping in mind: They made bold claims about everything: 5th generation fighter - about as stealthy as a Mirage, a much older French jet. T14 Armata - so stealthy it doesn't show up, most likely because it's underpowered and useless. Their only aircraft carrier? A total wreck, constantly on fire. The Russians work with fear, trying to scare the West. Media like this is why it's working, and why the war has been prolonged unnecessarily: Many in the West didn't want to deliver enough in the beginning, due to those scare tactics. All those caveats are nice, but you're still boosting their psi ops. Sad.

Russian hypersonic weapons are for propaganda more than being an actual game changing weapon system. The Zircon may travel at high speeds in the upper atmosphere where the air is much thinner, but when it comes down and actually has to travel through the thick air, and especially if it wants to hit anything, it has to slow down which means it can be intercepted by existing air defense systems. Having a missile be hypersonic isn't new, the V2 was technically a hypersonic weapon achieving speeds of over 5,000mph. The challenge is having that weapon maintain speed in atmosphere, doing so while actually carrying a warhead that packs a punch, and being able to track and hit its target accurately. These weapons don't do that. A hypersonic weapon needs to do something that cheaper weapon systems can't accomplish already, and so far all they can do for sure is make people unfamiliar with them quake in their boots because they hear they're "unstoppable".

The one question you didn't address, DOES THE MISSILE HAVE AN ENGINE, THRUST CAPACITY? Clearly rockets are used by everyone launching from the ground or even from aircraft to get to hypersonic speeds or an altitude to start the glide path to a target. This is where America is at in its development and we have seen the claims of Russian and CCP weapons to be far overstated. So likely these are glider bombs. The Space Shuttle is a hypersonic gliding vehicle, it shows the magnitude of forward distance to vertical distance of the glider, a rock with wings compared to an airplane.
Your experts are confusing saying a hypersonic vehicle is invisible to radar and in the next breath talk about radar detection, WHICH IS IT? Since some have been shot down in Ukraine, the latter is true, it can be detected by radar.
Hitting anything in a city with a gliding bomb is very easy. Hitting a high value target is much much harder since the range of flight paths can be determined for each potential target and as altitude decreases both the targets and the range of potential flight paths decrease significantly.
The math to define a flight path of a glider is well understood and the ancient computer in the shuttle could easily handle giving the pilots that information as it change by their actions continuously. The same math and better capacity is available to shoot down gliding bombs and any speed. This is especially true when the bomb sensors are useless at hypersonic speeds, flying blind.

The approach I would use is to be flying subsonic so the AI of the bomb or launch control can detect interceptors. Use hypersonic busts to avoid destruction. Much slower altitude drop so a bigger range of targets for a subsonic gliding bomb. Hypersonic bursts possibly could cause a change in target to closer ones.
