I am Chinese, and I would like to explain from another angle why Chinese people, especially traditional Chinese people, are worried about such things. China is a nation of history and we have great respect for history books. But according to Chinese history books, when men wear women's clothes and behave in an increasingly feminine way, it is a precursor to the imminent collapse of the dynasty. There are plenty of such accounts and arguments in the history books.

As an American I find the argument that we are supporting "effeminate" men in Asian countries as a means of control to be laughable. The US government isn't doing jack, and I doubt they care what men on Chinese TV look like. US citizens enjoy this type of media because we don't have it here, so we have to get it from other sources. Many women here are exhausted by overly macho, emotionally unavailable men and long for something different. Patriarchal masculinity is still entrenched in the US, and recently we are seeing a resurgence in nationalism which comes with more pressure for people to fit traditional gender roles. I also just find it very odd that pushes for men to be more "manly" are often from men, to other men, so men will inevitably strive for the approval of other men. Patriarchy is wild.
