Hey Ryan & Jessica, great intro video. I've been wanting to take an introductory course, and I like that you were learning on a smaller boat. Other 101 coursed I've viewed are all using larger boats and my desire (at least initially) is to really learn and be comfortable on a smaller daysailer boat in the 12ft to 16ft range. It appears from this video that this is the type of boat they teach on. Can you advise me of the name of the school you attended? Thanks guys! Kind regards, Tom Brady

About to start a 3 month course on sailing, keelboating, rowing, and all that jazz at my university. Any tips? I was already in the Marine Corps so I know how to swim...but I don't particular enjoy it in the open ocean. Lol

Good video. Looks like you have fun. I'd say that the boat heeled over, not keeled over. That would be a capsize. Small point. Enjoy your sailing.

This is like a diary narrative...almost usless in any sailing sense. The most useful part was a sort of weak momentary demonstration about not overwinding a winch and the girl (presumably the same one who's legs featured often in the video) saying 'it doesn't prepare us for sailing alone' The was no demonstation of flare or safety checks. There was no warning about fuel use ,storage and leakage ointo the ocean...or fumes on board. The comment on close hauling howed sails that were not...at first. There was no practical sailing education whatsoever...except a comment about sunscreen, sunnies and an hat....so he' used a towel...ok.... fair enough. MOB...a very important, if not most important skill, to handle showed nothing at all. MOB is one of the most frightening and risky and calmness reuiring ---along with practical experience...situations. You can quickly be hundreds of metres away from the MOB. Every person on board should have an L100 or L150 vest in luminours green and with at least pea-less whistle and a strobe...preferably floating and attached by lanyard to vest. This was more like an advetisement for a course than anything of proactical value an in general it showed people sitting around...and an untidy cockpit with some OHS hazards...that's learning to sail?...?

Long hair is a menace in any industry....sure it looks pretty but it can catch in machinery, blow around eyes and be caught in sheets lines and rigging...Better to have it cut or at least tightly wound and close to skull.

So at time I hit like button there are 1.1K thumbs up and exactly "101" thumbs down. Are those 101 people the ones who flunked the 101 course or are they just naturally born disagreeable people? Thanks for sharing the experience and it's awesome the instructor allowed you to video and share

Was this your first sailing experience? I want to start in sailing but it seems that I would be better off starting in something like a Sunfish rather than a large sailboat. I realize that this course is to get a rating but I just want to learn to sail and $500 is a bit much for someone just starting out. There's a local yacht club that teaches in Sunfish class boats, but you have to join the club for $400 and pay $350 for the lesson. Guess most people just buy a small sailboat and teach themselves.

Hi J&R ... I'm an Old Guy, but, with my Son, JR, we just took ASA 101. Loved the course and shared a lot of similar experiences with what you talked about in the Video. We took our course at GoSailAZ from Captain Clint. It was an awesome experience. We had some really great winds out on Lake Pleasant, which allowed us to get a lot of practice at Tacks, Jibes, the overloading of the sails, MOB, Heave To, etc.. I've already watched some of your subsequent videos, and loved those too. Knowing how busy we were when we were out on the water for the two days of this course, I really appreciated the effort for you to make a Video for each one in addition to all the work it took you to participate in the course. ASA 101 was like 4 days in 2, and then a test at the end to boot. Thanks J&R! ... By the way, I believe that it is best to get sea-sick, and learn how to get over it, than it is to not get sick in easy seas and learn how to deal with it in rough seas. I'm an old Navy guy, and while I wasn't on a sailboat, the first six weeks I spent out at sea were all about sea sickness the hard way. But later, when our crew had to sail through a typhoon, I was able to sustain myself through the ordeal without becoming sick, while some of the 'old timers' who 'never got seasick in their life' they didn't fare as well. I hope that info is a help for you. Great Sailing in your future! :)

I noticed you all are in Austin area. We are in DFW and thinking about ASA school as well. I know there is a school at Lake Travis and 1 here in Dallas. I was wondering why you chose to go down south to take the course. Do you think the experience was better on the coast? If so, we might do the same.

Just found your channel looked like you are having fun learning to sail and boat shopping.
Idea, make an introduction video about each other and together ect. And perhaps organize the playlist a bit differently land travel vs boating, or year ect.
Enjoy and good luck on your life and boating🌞😎⛵️

Hey Jessica and Ryan, these videos are great! I've just started researching the ASA 101 class and hope to take it soon. This video was one of the first that came up in my search. Imagine my surprise when I saw that you did this in Kemah (20 minutes from home) and also took it at the school that is at the top of my list. It's got me even more ready to get started. I've since watched your latest videos to see how your sailing adventures have continued. Keep the videos coming!
