From memory, the ones in recent memory that have been trapped in cars while submerged were children. ANCAP ain't gonna help those kids with a safety hammer; dodgy parental intervention is what they needed!!

Its been rested before, and IF you can stay calm and wait for the entire cab to be filled with water. You can open the door as the pressure should be ewual. But..its about staying calm in that air bubble. While your cab is filling with water. With with newer cars that claim "sealed from NBC"... You'll lose that pressure differential so slowly that you might not make that last manageable breath. Even more so if that mfg wants armored glass in all their vehicles. The eletronics can still eaily fail and windows stop working for the second or so they can.
It is possible to open the door and window while the vehicle is partially submerged, but it must be before water has started to reach that door or window. Which in the case of most vehicles, is maybe a few seconds you have to force it open.

I’ve been seeing a lot of ads going on about car doors not opening under water, dunno what they’re on about because i never go past the obligatory 5 second wait time. But now seeing this it makes me wonder why the trend? Has there been a lot of cars going under lately? Or are they expecting a lot of rain in the near future? Maybe i should sell the car and build a floating zoo.

I have been led to believe that ANCAP is about to introduce a Thermonuclear Survivabilty Test Rating based on the cain capsule heat and radiation reflecting ability. We'll probably see this with the yet to be announced (publicly) MG Chery Maralinga GTR SUV. I'm ordering one now online. Don't want to miss out!

I have no idea how true this is, but apparently you can use your seat-belt buckle to smash a window. Not the sort of thing I have the means or inclination to test, but if anyone out there has access to a wrecking yard, it'd be pretty interesting to see if it's true.

We lived in Japan in the early 70's, my father was stationed there. There was a car manufacturer there called Cherry, they made cool little cars. Very popular there, of course probably zero safety rating compared to today's standards.

Could Ancap be an example of "peak woke"? Perhaps a theory of why the car industry won't stand up to anyone including ANCAP for their ridiculous ideas or new requirements is perhaps the fear of being penalized for going against their way of thinking or at least questioning it. Such a theory wouldn't surprise if it were true.

If I had to survive a car crashing and submerging in water, I would rather be driving a 1951 Chevy DeLuxe than any modern car. The windows and door latches were all mechanical and there is ample room to get out from behind the steering wheel. In most modern cars with their power everything and "lumbar supporting, side bolstered seats? Good luck!

ANCAP really has some terrible priorities, you could have top marks in the crash testing but miss out on a 5 star rating because the car maker spent their money on making the car safe in a crash and didn't add the $10 hammer.

I wonder if ANCAP has completed a crash test with dumies having received various states of trauma up to and including total immobility tgeyn how many seconds and minutes then must hold their breath to not inhale (or touch) the excessively toxic gasses. Also how long they can survive as the burning battery heads up to 2500°C

Clearly these knobheads have never tried using a hammer underwater else they'd know how futile it is to try and hit something with the impact required to break toughened glass. Better by far to carry a spring loaded metal punch in your pocket.

A
ANCAP is a joke. I take no notice of the star rating because it is flawed. I have upset a few carsales people when they said the car had 5 stars. My comments ranged from useles rating to asking when and how long ago that rating was awarded. Why hasn't our motoring organisation commented on this faulty questionable rating system?

There are many cars that won't let you open the window if crashed on the dry, let alone under water.
The ability of opening /breaking the window under water is the prerequisite for being able to open the door given the outside water pressure.

I have been carrying a hammer in my car ever since manual opening of the windows is NOT available in passenger vehicles. Such hammer is available at your nearest friendly Bunnings outlet under $10 ..., you really do not need one from the car manufacturer.

Is the special hammer velcroed to the steering wheel, so that it can easily be located in the driver's chest immediately after an accident? Could account for the brown rating to the chest area...
