If you suffer from diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain or gas and bloating, you have likely done some research to explain your symptoms. One explanation to your symptoms you may have come across is leaky gut syndrome.

A list of supplements and dietary changes is often recommended to treat the ailments associated with possible ‘leaky gut syndrome.’ It’s easy to become overwhelmed by all the information and determine which sources are credible.

But the medical world doesn’t widely agree on the existence of a ‘leaky gut syndrome.’ While ‘leaky gut syndrome’ is not currently accepted by all doctors, the term intestinal-permeability is gaining recognition among the medical community. In simple terms, the idea that the lining of your gut can be damaged, subsequently causing ‘leaking,’ is credible.

However, no studies have demonstrated this finding is causative in the manifestation of other systemic diseases like chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. So, what is there to do if you’re suffering from chronic gastrointestinal symptoms?

It’s reasonable to seek care from a gastroenterologist. Tests can help to rule out diseases like Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s, Celiac and Peptic Ulcer, among others. And if you continue to suspect a ‘leaky gut,’ you should speak with your healthcare provider.

While no test is routinely used in a clinical setting to diagnose ‘leaky gut,’ there are some steps you can take to improve your overall gut health and improve gastrointestinal symptoms. Consider a diet that eliminates high amounts of carbohydrates, fats and processed foods. Avoid heavy use of NSAIDs (after a discussion with your doctor). Limit alcohol intake. If diarrhea is a large part of your symptoms, a supplement called I-glutamine can help, and can improve gut permeability. Talk with your doctor before starting any supplement. Make efforts to control chronic stress.

If you experience persistent, continued symptoms after taking steps toward improvement, make an appointment to see one of the gastroenterologists at Granite Peaks Gastroenterology to start feeling better soon.
