I’ve gone bullfrog hunting! I recently found one that had punctured ears though. I released him and he seemed fine, but I am curious as to whether or not they can survive with punctured ears like that. 🤔

Cute "little" gal...speaking of bullfrogs...one of my favorites is the African Bullfrog...talk about weight and girth...these guys are tops...and their appetite matches their size!

You’re wrong about the habitats, wether by natural or artificial distribution they do exist in California as well, I only know this because I’ve seen them and heard them near Felton which is near Santa Cruz California

I've hear it said that another easy way to tell if a bullfrog is male or female is the size of their "ears"
apparently males ears are at least twice the size of their eye while females are closer to a 1:1 ratio

Way back when I was 21 I had a friend who bought property in Harmony Maine and we lived in Malden MASSACHUSETTS. We would go up for the weekend. I wish I had video. I spent almost a whole day I collecting FROGS. I had almost a whole bucket load, then I saw him, biggest I ever saw, I poured out all the frog. I told my friend I'm not leaving without that FROG! I told him I'm dead serious. I did have hip boots, I wish.I had video. I saw.crap loads of FROG, turtles and GARTER snakes. I heard a noise right next to me a turtle splashed into the little creek. I locked up and the FROG jumped , my hand caught him! I got him a bucket of water. My friend said are you coming or staying? I showed him the FROG. I kept the FROG all summer, but brought him back to the creek in late August in 1988.

I remember catching bullfrogs when I was younger. My brother was the best at catching them and we would put them in our “water table” (like a small standing sandbox of sorts)

Actually my most recent encounter with one was when I was driving home from work. I pulled into the driveway and my lights caught the sight of it just chilling right where I needed to pull up. It would have been squished if I didn’t get out to move it. So I got out and it stared at me with that dumb look and I eventually poked it so it moved out of the way. I was happy I was able to keep it safe ^^

Here in Northern California, American bullfrogs are considered invasive because they are not native, can establish themselves and can outcompete many other native amphibians and some other animals. A couple years ago they moved into "our" pond. Since then, we have lost all our newts. Garter snake sightings have gone from common to extremely rare. Our chorus (tree) frog population is greatly diminished. We are not so fond of bullfrogs even though they are impressive creatures. The only good thing we have noticed is that now in the winter, the pond is visited by merganser ducks that can eat the tads and adults, this is a new thing.

I keep adding smaller fish to my decorative pond. They keep disappearing… I have 3 bullfrogs that have decided my pond is home.

Could they be eating my smaller fish?

I figured birds were getting them… but after watching this… now I wonder if it’s the dang bullfrogs!

My bigger fish are fine… the ones that are too big to fit in a frogs mouth… I’d never considered this b4 now.

Thank you for your video we enjoyed it. One thing about the range and veracious predators, I've seen what can happen as an invasive species even within the USA. A "leg farmer" of sorts had either an escape event or released into an area that was not a traditional region and although it's far north and they develop slowly, each stage from tadpole to massive adult is trouble to the native wildlife

Easiest way to catch em is with a topwater frog, or even a hook with a plastic worm or jig on it, they hunt and aniliate anything you put infront of em, good eatin also fry them legs up in some grease

When I was young I was the 10-13 yr old Crocodile Hunter. I was a avid snake catcher, I used to catch bullfrog, snakes, bats, rabbit's, everything. I perfected it. I could been a avid wildlife expert until something in my life derailed any dreams I had. I even used to catch chipmunks, birds. When I was maybe 5 I caught a turtle. It was a baby turtle a painted turtle. I'm 36 and I still have him. The turtle is 36 years old!

Here in British Columbia there also an invasive nuisance and at least partially responsible for the sharp decline of native frogs including the northern leopard frog. The province goes to some expense trying to eradicate them and posts wanted posters for want of a better description at local wetlands. Legend says introduction in the Fraser valley was due to the great 1948 flood permitting escape from a failed frog leg farm🤷🏻‍♂️

For about 2 months now, a regular client of mine has had a fairly large bullfrog living at the end of a submerged 4" corrugated drain pipe that connects to 2 of their front rain gutter downspouts. It empties into the edge of a thicket that offers some cover whenever the frog decides to hang out on the ground just outside the pipe.

The drain pipe is perforated, so some of the rain water is absorbed into the soil, but only during a multi-week summer drought does it completely dry out. I run the garden hose into it whenever it starts drying out, if theres an aquatic frog occupying it.

A green frog had been living there for 2-3 seasons, but then the drain pipe was vacant for a few years until this bullfrog moved in early July. These frogs apparently come from a nearby retention pond thats become overrun by Canada geese, and has no natural cover.

HELP PLEASE,
Hey Guys... its 1/10/2024 and very cold 60 deg in day and very cold at night 40's give or take 5 degs.

My bullfrog is about 4 or 5 years old and has grown up from tadpole in about a 50 gallon outside guppy pond, that stays heated the best I can during winter... some of the guppies die off as winter sets in, but still lots always survive, along with "Buddy the Frog".

However, this summer he migrated out of the guppy pond, up into the jacuzzi pond (gold fish), they're side by side, I think because we have a racoon and or opossums that trolls our backyard.

Anyway, so now, he has taken up residence in our above ground biofilter, its a black tote like container that the water intake & return flows thru and is full of Matala pads.... long story short their is no room for him in there, I have to leave the lid askew or he'd be smashed like a pancake... I could send pic... but I read Bullfrogs need 65 - 70 degrees, if not the warmth, then they need mud for hibernation to survive the cold, which he doesnt have.

So given the stituation of no mud to hibernate in, and he cant stay where hes at sitting on top of matala, squished by lid of tote (biofilter)... should I catch him and try and lock him in guppy pond that supports the guppies?

Or is that to traumatic to him or will he surely die left to the outdoor elements currently?

Its pretty cold here even for So Cal.

He looks so sad when you lift the lid on filter and hes just sitting there, looking cold and frozen, I feel so bad for him because from what I read, hes definitely not in the ideal stituation.

I'd appreciate any suggestion and Thank You

Thank you very much for your advice and we took it.

My husband said when he picked him up he didnt struggle at all and my husband said he felt frozen (poor guy).

After he put him the guppy pond my husband said it took him a few, but he thinks Buddy (the frog) was grateful.

Ive never feed the frog because I believe he eats the guppies, so Im assuming I really dont need to.

We put a couple of red bricks on the ledge so he has at least one red brick out of water.

Hopefully, it all works out for Buddy... I think hes really cool... not meaning cold lol😊
