I was thinking about getting an orange Pi B and wasn't thinking at all about putting a NVMe drive on it. I decided to order a Raspberry Pi 5 instead because of the better software support. I am still not very proficient with Linux and I am re-learning coding after 20 years. I didn't want to have to deal with a bunch of little problems when I am supposed to be studying automation and AI. The PCIe slot on my RP5 will most likely be used to install a Coral TPU since that is the one thing I was missing by going with the Pi 5. Don't really need those 4 extra cores and the PCIe flexibility on the RP5 is a game changer. Eventually, I will be building the RP5 into a cyberdeck. I also think my next NAS build will use a RP5.
I think eMMC or even SD speeds are fine for what I'm doing currently.
I still think I will get an Orange Pi 5 at some point to build an emulation box. I could easily fill a 2TB NVMe drive with games.

Rather than just numbers for max throughput, in every day use is the nvme actually noticeably faster than the emmc? I just got an OPi5+ and got the 256GB eMMC because it was literally $1 more than one without. It seems fine, but since I can get a 256gb nvme drive for $17, I'll certainly do that if it's actually a major improvement. If it's one of those 'the benchmarks say yes, but it feels the same because the disk speed isn't the bottleneck in the first place' then I won't waste the time.

I'm building a cyberdeck and was going to go for the Raspberry Pi 5 for it, but after MicroCenter said 'Yes we'll have them on 10/23!' only to change that to 11/3 a day later, I decided on the OrangePi 5+. Thanks for all your content, it's great!

Will disk read/write speeds affect emulation of higher end systems?

5 plus comes with PCIe 3.0 x4, not 4.0

I think it really depends on what you are using this for and what is important to you. If having an m.2 NVME slot is what you want for faster OS write and read speeds and don't care about taking up a USB port for wifi/BT then this or the plus would be for you. I use the Orange Pi 5B for strictly retro gaming which is the exact same GPU/CPU as the Orange Pi 5 and the plus version. Great comparison though. I have subscribed to your page and look forward to your very informative Pi videos. Awesome job!

Hi Lee I previously used a : MAX98357A i2s amplifier with a raspberry pi 4. Is there a way to get the : MAX98357A working with the orange pi 5B... which operating system ? Thanks

Do you know if they make a daughter board for the OrangePi 5 similar to the ones for Pi that allow all of the external connections to be on one side of the case, making it easier for stacking and placement a lot easier?

Just to clarify, the 5 comes with PCI-E 3.0 not 2.0
Also performance difference between 3.0 and 4.0 wont be huge on an SOC like this unfortunately. SSD's with a fast controller and a big cache may benefit but not by a lot.

It is worth mentioning that many SBCs and NUC style computers don't have a real PCIe bus and the speeds that would represent. I have a Beelink N5095 Celeron machine that runs well, but has abysmal read/write performance on both the Sata3 and Nvme drives. Nvme is better, about double Sata speeds, but they both suck given the arrangement of the devices. I won't make that mistake again, but in fairness the machine does what I expect it to do.

It's PCIe 3.0. - Orange Pi 5 Plus has M.2 connector M key for NVMe with PCIe 3.0 x4 lanes.
I like your channel, I've learned a lot from your Raspberry Pi video's. Now I want to buy Orange Pi 5 Plus. Thank you.

It was cool to be sure of teh comparison. What I liked most about this new one video was that you saw some real value about the first model Orange Pi 5 and made a preview of the Plus model.

I don't think It is pcie 4.0. It is pcie with 4 lanes with Version 3.0 maybe. Pcie x4 is not automatically Pcie 4.0

Orange Pi 5B is total mistake - you can have wifi/bt on the usb stick in Orange Pi 5 and everything works much better.
Let me test Orange Pi 5 Plus now - that sounds superb with 2x 2.5Gbps NICs and PCI 4x

Can we assume your eMMC is 5.1? They state 50,000~ (?) As random. Also opi5 PCIe is 2.0...im sure you know. But rk3588 datasheet says PCIe is 3.1 but opi5+ say 3.0 on m2. (?).🤒🤗✌️😇,jpk
Rock pi 5 is pcie3.1 but thermal problems plague me using 4tb ssd. Peltier cooler(?).
Later. Great stuff.

Sorry for the hijack but the recently announced Orange Pi 5 Plus has the uncrippled RK3588 with far better I/O. My media server really needs that for management and a 'defacto standard' PCIe v3 x4 M.2 2280 NVMe drive (oodles available). The 8GB version is about $100 not including p/s brick. Besides Orange Pi OS, Android 12, Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04 the well known Armbian O/S has just announced support.
Beside RPi 4 fans, the product that may be left in the dust is the Radxa Rock 5B which is about $150 for an 8GB model - ouch!
Looking forward to your review! 🤩

I can’t wait to see what the 5 plus can do. The web site says 2K megs write speed, although I’m a little curious if it’s going to be faster depending on the rated speeds of the NVMe itself.
