How to Backtest PROPERLY

Hmm, I never thought about doing backtesting for manual trading. I have only used it for algorithmic trading, so no need to block of times for not trading.

Arty, thank you for the part in this video where you tell about the duration of back-testing/forward-testing. I have a strategy I have documented in detail with many days of past performance. I then have another excel sheet with forward testing. I also have taken and will continue to take time to identify confluences as we both know are necessary prior to trade entry. Thank you.

Great video! I find two problems with backtesting. 1) The bid/ask spread isn’t considered, and not even known. Spread can make a huge difference, especially when scalping. 2) Buy/sell signals aren’t timed accurately. The high/low difference in a candle can be substantial. Just exactly where does a backtest make the trade? High? Low? Open? Close? In my mind, the backtest should use the price at the moment the indicator generates the signal. But backtesting doesn’t seem to do that. At least Replay in TradingView doesn’t. If there is software that overcomes these two issues, I’ll buy it!

This is an AWESOME video, I was one who didn't like to backtest because I really didn't know what I was looking for and had no structure of what to do, but you made it so clear to understand. Now I have a guided view of what I am going to practice and mark the time sessions I am available and when I am up to trade my pairs. Thanks again!!

Also once the time frame is determined once we did a back test for that particular day do we just keep going back in the past to find that same time zone? Thanks. Struggling to figure this out while Struggling to use these tools. 😅

I know currency is your thing, I assume because it's 24/7 and the definition of liquidity, but as someone who's mostly looking at equities and works in longer time frames, I'm curious how much of what you talk about transfers in your estimation. (I know you don't like this question, but I'm not asking if your strategy works in another context, but more about the concepts themselves).

I have been using an Indicator called "Sonarlab Sessions". This will show you when the Asian, London, and New York sessions start and end on the chart. For some reason it doesnt show the Australian session though. This makes it easy to know when each session begins and ends.

@The Moving Average This was a great video. Thanks for your insight. Especially backtesting during the timeframes in which you ordinarily trade. I'm an option trader, so my strategy is more for swing trades rather than day trades unless I hit my profit margin early (the same day) then I exit. Do you have a video for backtesting using a swing trade strategy or is it principally the same as day trading but with using a hour chart for entry and exit points?

Tradingview doesn't give you enough data for backtesting. For example, their 1Min chart replay only goes back 9 days on Pro+ and 18 days on Premium (the most expensive plan), which is laughably small amount of time. How am I supposed to backtest a strategy on just 9 days of data? I am currently looking for a more fitting solution..
