The reason coins have reed to begin with is to prevent thieves from shaving off a small bit from the edge of a round coin. Looks like the US Mint took a page from the thieves.

Notice how since Biden has been on office, the ASE is no longer the best government coin to buy in the US anymore. It's been Britannias or Maple Leaves.

He ruined the design, he added a useless security feature, and the premiums are through the roof while your USD drops to zero value.

Eagles are overpriced and overrated. Britannia's are superior in every way.

I agree and Probably they will add two reeds after this design goes around once over the years. Or maybe micro printing by then.

I think a micro printed date in the missing reed would be awesome maybe even a black light dye that’s invisibly imbedded into the coin that says USA across it or something.

I think the new 2021 reverse with the flying eagle is so much more artistic and detailed than the rather stilted and iMobile previous version. Thank you for discussing the missing reed.... I saw that in 2021, but no one until you has said anything about this feature.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for 'splainin this security feature! Just getting into some coins and wanted to get some 2022 silver for Christmas presents. I wound up with some fake 2020's, good thing I didn't pay asking price! Noticed the "o" in the "one dollar" difference, so no wonder I got such a great price! Haha! Now that I've found your channel, I'll be better informed. Cheers!

I have 18 2022 silver eagles with the missing reed at 6 o'clock. Error or fake? I'm concerned even though they are 3.1 grams or 1.1 oz like all my other misc years and also perfect matching diameter.
Should I take these to a local coin dealer for inspection. Purchased at $31.50 each

Which is more likely, the missing reed adjacent to the round flat sun is a super high tech anti counterfitting technique... or that is where the new RFID identifier will be attached once the US dollar collapses and we go back to a hypothecated silver (certificate) system. Hello!

Just got my 2023 ASE'S now the missing Reed is at the 3 o'clock position! Just so nobody freaks out. I agree Britannia has much better counterfeit protection, followed by Maple Leafs but at least it's something.
Let's start a pool.....where's the missing reed going to be in 2024?
I'm going with 9 o'clock....😂

as someone who's done R&D/reverse engineering of tooling for reproduction, but with no knowledge of what else an ASE might have for security, I've never understood how reeding is considered a security feature outside of stopping clipping. Any mass produced replica will use a multi-piece collar die, swapping out 1 plate isn't expensive; if it's a full ring collar die then clocking grooves can be used and whenever the missing reed moves, just realign the top/bottom dies to the corresponding groove - making vertical reeds inside a collar can be done with any lathe or shaper.

I think that even if they updated the missing reed, a more visual security feature is needed. American eagles are beautiful but definitely need an additional security feature

I bought five 2021 EAGLES. When I put them on my Sigma verifier each coin when out of the box just to the right of the box and almost touching the box. I didn't know about this security feature but each coin has the missing read just below the date. Anybody have any ideas why this happened on the verifier.

Ok, the missing reed is the overt security feature. The new type 2 eagles have an overt and covert security feature. There is another video out there showing the type 2 under high power microscope. It zooms in on the reeds from a side view and slowly spins the coin around. The reeds are all different sizes. They get bigger and then smaller!

1. it's seems anyone could figure out where the missing reed is and remove it - it could pass. 2. I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I have been audited and IRS asks if you have precious metals bullion or numismatic . in 1932 FDR made ownership of gold and silver illegal, you had to turn it in. The monster boxes have a GPS tracker right in the box. Do the math.

I'm a new stacker started a two months ago even I knew the missing reed changes position each year. You would think the US MINT would have a bit more sophisticated security feature's. Maybe they do but they're not making that public information !🤷‍♂
