The 45-70 stock has a lot of drop at the butt. It makes it a cheek slapper

Always wanted to build a stubby SBR with folding stock and integral suppressed barrel in 458 socomm.

The ultimate FAFO firearm 😂

If 458 socom can’t even penetrate mild steel, then why use it at all? Most rifle rounds will shred through mild steel with no problem. The 458 seems like a waste and just dumb…..

Where'd you get ahold of 300 grainers going 2300 fps out of an 18.5" barrel? I need some of those.

Do .458 SOCOM v. .450 Bushmaster. More valid comparison.

Shoulder firing the 45-70 is much nicer on the body. Bench for whatever reason makes it seem worse than it is.

The rifles are designed for different jobs as well though. I load .458 SOCOM and I've got some bullets that are 576gr. Are there projectiles for the .45-70 in this weight?

Not even close but a 458 soco. With a 325 ahornady FTX will penatrate 4 milk jugs of water an uncarved pumpkin and the inch and a half thick board you put behind everything so you could capture the bullet at 50 yds. It's a beast of a cartridge it's fantastic and an AR platform

Great video. Your velocity with the .45-70 indicates you were using H4198 or IMR 4198 minimum powder charges. My reload is 53.7 grains of IMR 4198 under a 300 grain Hornady HP with 2300 fps which equates to over 3500 ft.lbs. of energy.
It shoots sub MOA at 100 yards and even with a minimum starting load enough guts for anything you can hunt in North America. It would be interesting to see what a hard cast lead would do instead of the traditional cup and core bullet on steel or any other medium you could imagine. I think it would be unstoppable. Keep bringing 'em, Banana.

A FMJ of ballistic tipped bullet will work better for both rounds. Soft points are for expansion and damage to tissue.

I have a Ruger No 1 in 45-70, and you will definitely feel it with "Ruger only" hot loads. I would like to see how the 45-70 does on mild steel with a 500 gr. monolithic solid and a max load of powder.
