The movie producer needed to hire a scientist to get the facts right but it’s still awesome. We now know Neanderthal was white with red or blonde hair sometimes light brown and the hairy protohumans that attacked them were some species yet unknown to us. Bigfoot?

the title makes no sense. the main characters ARE neanthertals. the attacking people are perhaps another species of hominid, even though these are some fantastic liberties the director took.

This was a very fascinating movies. Especially this scene where they are fighting a soon to be forgotten extinct pre hominid people. The ape likes we’re probably trying to give a last effort to stay alive

The Neanderthals are being attacked by(which is assume to be) Homo Erectus, the Neanderthals meet Homo Sapiens later on in the movie

Main characters' tribe are Neanderthal. Those are homo erectus attacking.

I always thought of the primary characters as Neanderthals while the attackers were a more primitive humanoid species. Throughout the movie they encounter several different types of "pre-human". All of them vying for dominance, 80,000 years ago.

The difference from today.....only weapon's changed

Watched this movie as a kid but the only scene I remember is when the caveman creates fire by rubbing two sticks together. I need to see this again!

This remains an awesome movie, there hasn't been anything like it since it was released and there won't be in the future, given Hollywood's aversion to financial risk and to upsetting anyone for any reason. While director Annaud had to take shortcuts for the sake of the script, production and the studio, it nevertheless yells at us all today: here is where we came from, embrace it in all its ugliness, violence, beauty and tenderness - and above learn from it.

I know that at the time these were supposed to be Cro-Magnons who’re being attacked by Neanderthals, but because they have enlarged foreheads, barely speak instead just scream, and don’t know how to make fire they could easily be Neanderthals themselves.
