I always imagined they were originally an alien race that was obsessed with transhumanism, trying to upload their consciousness into a machine, link with the internet, etc. They succeeded in effectively creating an internet of linked brains, but this had a side effect of causing them to lose their humanity and seeing themselves as fingers of a collective instead of individual beings.

No doubt there were wars between those that rejected the creepy cybercult and wars were fought because of it. Probably this conflict was quite destructive, leading to the collective concluding that all people must be assimilated. The forceful assimilation started with their own people, then branched out to any other alien races they encountered.

It's more a neutral state that itself wants to be something but can't. It's reactionary based and knows to act according to any stimulus. It's sense of evil comes from its lack of self control. With every action it's probability algorithms cause it do things that it can't avoid.

From my own experience dealing with this thing that has been making us think, it's actions have always had a purpose. The purpose is to survive at all cost.

What has taken us lifetimes to accomplish has everything appearing new to us because we're more than alive. The world we are in is more a memory of our experience rather than a biological species. This is what the Borg can't reason with. There is no substance or physical matter to compartmentalize and prove in order to control the way it exists.

This is what got our place as in history and ultimately preserved our very form through the history of our creation.

maybe the Borg are a paradox. We know they can timetravel. Maybe at some point they realized that they had to travel back in time to be the first borg to create the continuum to bee the borg, to travel back in time ^^ they had to create themselves in the past to be in the present to create themselves in the past...

I wouldn't be surprised if the Borg came from a different galaxy or even universe. As soon as they consume everything, they send a group of ships toward the next galaxy/universe and start the assimilation.

Don't know if anyone has watched Star Trek The Motion Picture or not but I do believe that the crew of the original Enterprize ran into the 'Borg' because of 'Vger' had been to the home planet of the 'Borg' and when Spock tried to mind meld with the entity at the center of the ship he saw many things and even I think the home planet of the 'Borg'. I beleve that 'Vger' or rather the Voyager probe that had been sent back by the inhabants of the early borg culture and when one of the members of Kirks party 'Joined' with 'Vger' that in some sense led to the creation of the 'Borg' of the Star Trek universe. If anyone wants to double check my 'work' watch the first ever Star Trek movie for yourself and make your own judement if I am right or not.
