Not even kidding, a lot of people make this mistake, especially non-native speakers. It's pretty common to see people say something like "D: hard R" when someone calls someone else rarted. I personally never made this mistake since I was specifically told about the N-word and the letter R at the end when I attended English classes. Admittedly, it was at the age of like 18, but thankfully I have never said the word itself prior despite not having a clue about its meaning. Context: I live in a country where the education is completely fucked, specifically history, that's on purpose but it's not the point. No one knows that much about slavery, there's like 3 black people living in our capital amongst 20 million of Caucasian people and other races. There's a lot of racist people here. It's pretty common to hear the N-word or something alarmingly close to it being used on the street, the Spanish word for the colour black is pretty much the decisive term for people of African descent, and so on. But I guess, my country and its stupidity isn't the topic of the discussion. What I was about to say is that many people appear to be confused as to what "hard R" means, and that's kinda understandable. If there is an infamous word that starts with an R and you're not fully informed on the racial slur, you could think that's what it refers to.

his poor soul. i understand where he comes from. since i'm not a person from english speaking countries i had no idea what the n word is for a long time. as much as i had the search for what n word is to know what it is and understand when somebody was racist.

Hard R when talking about mental disorders are pretty common here where I live after the growth in acceptance on mental disorders in Australia, at least to the older generations where reta^* was a common insult.

It was called hard R because to really drive the insult in, people would extend the R in an exaggerated way. This is actually quite similar to how Americans use hard R in the n word, when I think about it.

Why do people not have listening comprehension. The moment he said it was in American Dad I said "oh he means the r-word." How was this not obvious. There absolutely no chance the n-word would be used on t.v. casually at that time period, and the n-word was also never used widely casually in the early 2000s, so it's obvious what he meant to say. I feel bad for people who try to have opinions about anything but just have a poor vocab or stumble over their words but are well intentioned. People have zero patience to just ask and clarify they understand someone first before running with whatever they think they heard.
