Pope Patriarch Historic Talks: Fidel Castro issues peace message after the meeting

Cuba's former president Fidel Castro is issuing a message of peace.

In an article for a national paper he reiterates the historic nature of the recent meeting in Cuba of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow. Castro also held his own meeting with Kirill.

The historic tete-tete took place at an airport terminal. It was the first ever between a Roman Catholic pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch, nearly 1,000 years after the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart.

The leaders united to issue a global appeal for the protection of Christians under assault in the Middle East. Castro oversaw the meeting.
