How To Prime & Glue PVC Pipe like a Master Plumber

Dude after you push the pipe in just give it a slight twist, actually 1/4 turn, I prefer a ³/16 turn . Lol

Ok, pipe manufacture states that glue should only be put on insert pipe, no glue in fitting and no more than a quarter turn after pipe seats in the fitting. Glue in the fitting, because it has a slight inside taper to it will cause the inserted pipe to back out as glue sets up, expanding as it cures. More than a quarter turn, especially to turn and turn on insert causes the glue and primer to smear and streak, even pushing out of fitting as well as to turn and turn it pushes the pipe out of fitting slightly, glue and primer is all smeared making chemical reaction bond weaker. Even if one holds glue joint "for awhile' temps, to much glue, humidity can hydraulic it apart. I just had a sprinkler company did not use the primer and just used the cement and it flooded all 4 of the valve boxes. It was a mess.

I am not a plumber but I think you need to read the manual on the can, because all products are different. For example it say to hold for 30 sec and turn 1/4 a turn.

Primer a lot. It's the reason you have to push so hard on the fittings. If you primer properly it'll slide right in the joint.

In uk we only use Solvent cement and the bond its unbreakable

I was taught three or four times around with primer. No one is going 30 times. Apply glue to both pieces, push in, quarter turn, hold for 5 seconds. Don’t overturn, can lead to leaks.

I’m not saying it’s a bad video, it’s not, but there’s no reason for it to take almost 5 minutes to glue one fitting to one pipe. You seriously overdid everything.

Just fixed a small busted pipe due to freezing and I’m sure the line is still frozen inside the fixed section now. How long should I wait for the glue to dry before turning on my water so it doesn’t just blow apart? Thanks in advance

Note: I have found over the years that applying it to the male side first leaves just enough glue to do the inside of the female fitting. Any excess glue on the male pipe will squeegee off to the outside of the connection, but wxcess glue on the inside of the female fitting will squeegee into the inside of the pipe and will leave globs on the inside of the pipe, which restricts flow, but more impotaintly if it breaks free can cause clogs on many things down stream.. So to limit excess gule inside the pipe glue the male first, and do not redip and glue the inside female... Don't wipe off too much glue for the male coating so that you leave enough for the female.

Can plumbers actually take the time and read the installation instructions on the primer and glue, 90% do it wrong

In other words: Read the directions. There is NOTHING in this video that you couldn't know unless you're illiterate or blind.
YOU DO NOT put pipe cement in the female side! That's the whole point of the taper and the priming! All the cement/solvent you put into the female side is now inside of the pipe! This causes turbulence, which is something to avoid on feed lines. It can also cause eventually clogging on drain lines. THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE to what you have shown because it was "show to you that way." Unbelievable. A video on how to NOT do something correctly. SMH The fact that you keep priming and priming like you're painting a wall is absurd.

is primer a substance that softens the PVC ? So it kind of makes the cement more easily to apply?

Where ruber glolves if you have them. That purple primer can make quite a mess. My pipe don't seem to seat properly and I'm wondering if I should sand it down?

Tip for better glue joints:

Prime the outside rim of the pipe, too. You want everything that touches the inside of the hub to be purple. Glue the rim of the pipe as well.

30 times only? That’s dodgey. I was taught to go around at least 200 times with the primer. Any less than that and the bond will fail

Plumber here couple rounds with the primer couple rounds with the glue and prime the face of your pipe too looks better than most apprentices I’ve worked around and some plumbers but don’t over complicate it bud appreciate the simple video for beginners and 1/4 turn is fine don’t turn continuously or it may leak. Easy way to do that is use the lettering on the pipe as a guide insert into the hub with the letters facing 8 o’clock and turn them up to 12. Hold them in as they will push out sometimes. And keep making videos like this 👍🏼 everybody does things for the first time at some point in their life and videos like this may help I used this to explain something to my wife

I don't get why some plumbers use primer. I've used PVC glue and it literally dissolved the PVC to weld it together. From the smell I'd say it was acetone based, but more like a gel, not a liquid.

This was for a vacuum application and it holds perfectly. I actually was too slow once with fitting the pipe in the fitting and I couldn't get it in all the way. They also specifically instructed me only to glue the outside of the pipe, so no glue gets pushed into the pipe. Also specifically forbade me from twisting.

Holy fuck with the primer.

I think 20 years ago my plumber used only cement on my 4" drain for the toilet. Can you usually get away with cement only for a drain? I'm trying to figure out if I can just redo the toilet flange / fitting, or if I need to redo the entire drain run? The toilet is leaking when flushed. :(

Put a small bevel on the end of your pipe so when you push it in the glue doesn't get scraped away. Also, scuff the end for better adherence.
