Use Linked Text in Word to Update Multiple Documents at the Same Time

Where can these files be stored and how "far apart" can they be? Different folders on teams/sharepoint?

Can this be used interchangeably? Do you always have to make the changes in the original, source file or can you make the change in the second, third linked document and it will update the original, source file?
