The Cyber 'dirty lab' built by 3SDL, Borwell and Encription at Malvern Hills Science Park caught the media's attention yesterday following a lead item on regional BBC TV news programme Midlands Today.
Live interviews with 3SDL Chairman Dibble Clark on 5Live Breakfast and BBC Herefordshire and Worcestershire were followed a feature piece by Phil Mackie on Radio 4's Today programme. The new lab is part of a Malvern Cyber Security Group (MCSG) initiative to improve cyber security across regional SMEs struggling to gain affordable access to the larger facilities owned by Government and the big corporations.
Although partly reported as government funded, and with some overly enthusiastic and therefore slightly misleading references to our friends in Cheltenham, the lab is funded entirely by private money. It is however very much part of the Government's initiative to improve cyber security awareness across SMEs. The MCSG has been given great support and encouragement in this from BIS, UKTI and the visit of Home Office Minister James Brokenshire.
Such pan-department support is not often seen by the small guys and is largely down to the efforts of our local MP Harriett Baldwin in promoting her 'Cyber Valley' vision. She is also encouraging link-ups with QinetiQ, whose resources in this area are significant and potentially highly complementary. Harriet is pictured below with Dibble during a preview visit to the lab
