yep, anyone saying they can outshoot a scope with iron sights is a damn liar or fool at best, coming from someone who shoots irons in competition with a 34” custom made Sharps with a 400$ precision tang and globe sight. My point being that I can outshoot that rifle with a used 200$ CVA 45-70 with a 100$ scope.
ОтветитьHey WTW, I have a Marlin 45/70 and use the Hornady 325 grain Lever evolution for whitetail. Out of the deer I got I had 1 that ran for a distance but the rest of my deer dropped within a few yards. Anyways that is my thoughts. By the way I zero in at a 100 yards plus 1 inch for (in case) longer shots.
ОтветитьYou're right my blind ass can't see the iron sights as clear as I used to 😂
ОтветитьIs there a difference between a board or glass straight up or at any angle changing how far the bullet will go
ОтветитьI have a very customised Marlin 45-70, tweeked for acuracy by one of the best gunsmiths in the world. Ive tested every known brand of ammo out there...Long story short Winchester Supreme 300 gr..Nosler Partition is number 1...3/4" 5 shot 100 yards time after time. Dont waste your money, I did it for you. 😮
ОтветитьWhere’s the hard cast
ОтветитьExpensive video but very fun!!! Nice video!!!
ОтветитьThanks for the great video!
ОтветитьIt will take out the blocks on vehicles at 100 yards! Real men don't use the lead sled! However, wish I had one for the big boy?
ОтветитьI have a 1895g that shoots 405gr core locks really well but i cant find them anymore. Just picked up some 325gr ftx but havent tried them yet
ОтветитьI really don't think hey you could beat me using your scope in the iron sights set I put them all in the center.
ОтветитьQuestion? Why is it so many people want such a large caliber gun that was originally designed using larger heavier bullets an works quite well as they were. Now every one want lighter zippier bullets. If they want lighter zippy bullets there are plenty of rounds out there that will do the same thing that are designed for the lighter bullets.
ОтветитьA Scope on a Lever Action Rifle. Want me to hold your hand...Grow up.
ОтветитьI have Garrett Cartridges of Texas for my Marlin 45-70. They have various grain weights and feet per second rated cartridges depending on what you are going to use tgem for. Mine are 420-gr SuperHardCast Hammerhead at 1350fps. These and some others that Garrett manufactures are too powerful for some 45-70 and they list which rifles can safely fire different cartridges of theirs. Cheap? Not at all. But IMHO they are the best out there for any price.
ОтветитьI got the same results with the Hornady ammunition but I was switching to non lead last year. I picked up a box from Buffalo Boar and it shot better then the .250 grain Hornady.
ОтветитьFirst person I've seen not like the Hornady LeverEvolution. 200 yards isn't much tracking and you were able to track it. Can't been too bad.
ОтветитьI have the same rifle, use it for asiatic water buffalo, generally with a red dot at close range. However getting charged by a wounded buffalo is no fun. Thinking putting on similar scope. What is a realistic range? Use 325g gtx
ОтветитьWhat song is that at the end
ОтветитьThose Fort Scott rounds did very well. The really impressive point of this post was your shot groups at 100 yards with a lever action 45-70 Govt rounds were no bigger that just under 3 inches and down to 5/8ths of an inch. Just wow!!!
ОтветитьAnd before someone comments yes 336 is a 30/30.
ОтветитьI was surprised to see the Hornady flextips shooting low. I run them in my 336 Marlin and have great results on whitetails. These should go further and have more more foot-pounds at distance . Yes/no?
ОтветитьFort Scott was the worst it was 4 shots, first 3 was the group. Am I wrong?
ОтветитьI appreciate your time and money you put into this video very much!
My Marlin groups very good also. I will try the monoflex and see how it shoots.
But I am looking for a serious load for bear and a heavier lead.
Very awesome video just wondering if you did 45 70 with bond arms cyclops
ОтветитьThanks for the review. My Marlin seems to like the fusion. I have the 26” octagon barrel.
ОтветитьWhat’s with these stratospheric scopes😂
ОтветитьIs that a shower curtain behind you? And you're kinda whispering... You hiding from the wifey doing a review in the shower, bro? LOL.
Ответитьsome awesome groups some kinda sucky not so groups. It's not the dope it's the dope behind the dope.
ОтветитьI can reload .45-70, I love loading them for precision
ОтветитьI like to load 405 gr lead boolats from Oregon Trail/Lasercast for my 45-70’s including my Guide Gun. Funny thing is, that lever gun seems more manageable recoil-wise than my big ole single shots. Maybe it’s the porting…
ОтветитьI don't use scopes on my 45-70 lever actions, but I have no problem with you using a scope. I just wonder why you mounted it so high.
I don't use scopes on my lever action .45-70 rifles because they handle and carry better in thick woods without scopes. I'm 68 and wear bifocals, but I shoot very accurately with receiver mounted peep sights. I shoot with both eyes open, focus on the front sight, and my eyes automatically center the front bead in the rear peep. You can definitely shoot with precision with receiver sights, but not so much with open, buckhorn sights.
Thanks for doing this ammo test. I wonder how the Hornady 250 grain monoflex would have worked on your axis deer.
Reply
is that a marlin with micro groove barrel?
ОтветитьI love that lever action rifle
Ответитьthanks! have only shot my 45-70's with my handloads in cast 300 gr and 405 gr. i don't load mine very hot or you wind up making it no fun to shoot, especially with my henry single shot light weight carbine!
ОтветитьWhat scoop is that
ОтветитьI scope mine to all levers
ОтветитьYou do know the closer you have the scope to the barrel the easier it is to sight in your gun And your face won't be so far off the gun ,Great show keep them coming love the big bore
ОтветитьCan they scope quality or type make a difference being a big hitting riffle.
ОтветитьI've been hunting with and reloading the 45-70 for 54+ years. A lot has changed in those years with bullet construction, powders, and primers. I hunt with a 2014 Marlin 1895 classic in 45-70 with a leupold 1x4 pig plex scope. My load from Barnes #3 is 250 grain copper HP, Accurate 1680, at 2,500 feet per second, and that is not the top load! It is point blank to 200 yards, my range is 200 yards. It makes things real dead fast. Like I said, lot has changed since I first fired the 45-70 in a Springfield trapdoor with 405 grain bullet at 1,500 feet per second.
ОтветитьI really like this show.
ОтветитьGreat vid Hootie!
I get better than 1 minute of angle at 100y, spitting 410gr hornady sub-x out of my DPT suppressed Bergara BA13 (CVA Scout). Only thing is that for some reason, they're doing 1200fps out of my banger, so not subsonic.
I've shot 2 Red deer in NZ with it, both under 100y, and it knocks them down HARD with a broadside shot in the engine room. Perfect mushrooming, and very little meat damage.
I'm running a Ranger 1-8x24i with ballistic reticle, and I've sighted it in at 50y. Just happens that 2nd major mark below center crosshair puts it dead-on at 100y. Every once and a while, I recheck 100y zero with that holdover, (maybe half a dozen times so far), and every time I only fire once and absolute bullseye every time!
I was actually shocked I could get such repeatable accuracy from a 45/70!
Good shooting! No deer is going to walk away from you! ☺ i wish i could get some hornady 250 grain up here in northern Wis. I think it might be the best compromise!
ОтветитьYou can beat me with a scope. But I just can’t bring myself to put a scope on my Henry side loader. The things a work of art.
ОтветитьExcellent video. I got a Beregara ba13 single shot 45-70 and smoked a Deer at the 275 yards. I’m believing the 45-70 caliber is an unestimated caliber
ОтветитьBad way to start a video talking crap about iron sights.
ОтветитьYou are surely better with a scope but there is something about the lever guns and iron sights that connects you to a different time and challenge.
ОтветитьI have good things from other hunters about the 250gr Hornaday ... (kills) but I have not tried them.
ОтветитьI have one scoped and one with aperture sights. Love them both. Have taken a number of pigs with the open sight gun. Longest shot 125 yards. Have not taken game with the scoped one. My advice would be try to mount your scope lower on the gun if able. That is the perfect scope for that gun, for a conventional mount. Something about that micro grove rifling is finicky. If I recall hard cast bullets give best accuracy. There’s a good reason why Ruger ditched that type of rifling.
ОтветитьHornady 325 gr. -1 inch with Guide Gun. My most recent deer -never twitched .
You have to go with what your rifle likes though . Do you know if those copper bullets are designed to expand? If not I might go with the next best group.
R u in the bathroom?
