I added 16 GB Kingston ram into my Synology DS920+ with 4 GB already in it, and it doesn't boot up. All I see is just constant blinking blue light

look like it design for dual boot flash but implement only one. of fully implement maybe it more reliable because if you have only one and it failed that box will be a brick.

There is a reason to restrict to official only memory. In a NAS where timing across all four drives simultaneously write, back up and parity, timing would be important. And with different memory manufacturers not having identical attributes resulting in exact timing, don’t be a cheap bastard trying to save a buck after you spent over $650 USD on the DS920+ and one drive (minimum) when you want reliability and stability. Cut off the nose despite the face.

And damnit, man, wear a grounding strap!!!

Apparently 2 x NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM fans are a good replacement for quieter noise?
Anybody know if there are any new replacement models on the way?

This was useful. I'm replacing my QNAP with this model Synology right now. Just waiting on my DS920+ to ship now. My 3 year old QNAP TVS-473 is a paperweight. Backplane issues (known common issue for this model) fixed under warranty but took weeks to get them to authorize it. Just plain bad service. Shipping cost me 1/10 the price of the NAS. Updates causing problems. This last time is just shut itself off. After some testing I think it is the PSU but for me it isn't worth dealing with anymore. I'm done with QNAP. Absolute crap experience for me all around.

NAS was always on a UPS and I have backups. If you don't backup your NAS you are doing it wrong.

IMO all manufactures cut quality to hit a price point. Some do it properly. Some don't give a crap. In my experience QNAP gives the minimum amount of care to meet low standards of customer support and hardware quality. They lost me over my experience with them.

At least I can use my 3 x 8TB Reds and one of the memory modules I used with the QNAP so there is a bright spot. Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, SABNZBD is mainly what I use it for. (Yes I will be doing the driver hack for hardware transcoding.)

After purchasing two SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 for the Synology DS920+ I am hoping there wont be a problem with my HeatSink purchase. The Heat Sink I purchased for these drives are the EKWB EK-M.2 NVMe HeatSink, Nickel. My question is do you think there will be a problem using this set of Heat Sinks in this case/Housing? Thank you very much in advance for your attention and time replying to my questions. Love your video here. It is awesome.

So they made the casing plastic, and removed the second RAM slot .. and I still have to pay the same price or a little more. No, Thank you very much. Synology can keep their cheaply made over priced junk.

Soldered on memory. Another reason to move to another brand. Synology is taking too many lessons from Apple.

@Qrpblog
@Qrpblog - 27.06.2020 08:52

Another poor, cost savings driven choice by Synology: after using 20 year old networking speed standards on high end models and reducing the number of USBs, now soldered memory is the new thing to watch out for.

About the teardown to get to the memory, most of those steps aren't necessary. You don't need to remove the HDD cage, USB connector or NVME expansion card and take all that assembly apart, just take out the 4 screws that hold the mainboard on the chassis and it will come off.

Cool to see the breakdown, heals me of the pointless quirky need to disassemble my own 918+. The only thing I wonder is whats under that heatsink on the processor. Is there an IHS plate or straight to the die, soldiered or thermal paste. If its just a paste the build tech in me would be curious if they used a decent paste and if I could replace it with a very carefully applied liquid metal Cryonaught type paste solution. As well I would measure carefully and see if there was case room to install a very thin 40mm Noctua fan on that heatsink ... but theres probably not enough room for it.
Hmmm ... howbout water cooled with a tiny little block and rad ... going too far?
