Apple did the same thing with the 13" M1/M2 "Pro". This is nothing new and they're not changing the Air. These systems are just to take money from people who just have to have a MacBook Pro for a status symbol but cannot afford and don't need an actual MacBook Pro. I wish Apple would just call it MacBook though. It's extremely misleading to the uninformed. Overpriced as well since they're all basically just a MacBook Air with a fan. They don't even allow you to use a second external display with them.

hello, i am facing a slight electric shock like sensation on the top of lid of MacBook while charging with the given power adaptor itself and tried this in multiple sockets and outlets still the same, people over internet are saying this as tingling and it is normal, but it is causing discomfort to use the machine while charging, my question is, is everyone who have 2 prongs adaptor faces this issue in countries where grounding is done with a third prong ?

Respectfully, I don’t get why people are complaining so much about the M3 pro and its title. It deserved the title way more than the 13” pro it replaced, has basically all the pieces and looks of the pros (same build, same display, same extra ports over the air, better speaker and maybe mic setup, higher power headphone jack setup). The only things it really “lacks” at $400 less is a higher starting ram configuration and a base chip.
The reality is, they did what they should have done and gave the 13” pro a proper update and necessary price increase. Do I think it should have more ram or be $100 less? Totally, but it makes complete sense based on the existing MacBook options they have.

TL/DR: I disagree with the mindset that it’s essentially a MacBook Air variant. It’s clearly an affordable pro variant, as it has FAR more in common with the big brothers.

Thought i would add my 2 cents.
I've used my m1 air for 3 years and it has been a REALLY good machine. It had 16gb with a 512gb ssd. I just bought the new Macbook Pro m3 with 24gb and 1tb ssd. I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. IOS and android simulators are much quicker on the m3. I know I could have spent an additional $400 and got the m3 pro, but I would rather use that on a new monitor. I'm still using my thunderbolt display, which is still good by the way. Apple did a really good job designing it. However, I am lusting for a 5k display after experiencing the screen on my new m3.
I'm feeling like the base m3 with additional ram is a good fit for me.

What would be interesting is 14" MBP comparison. These are the same price points right now for me. M1 Pro 10 CPU vs M2 Pro 10 CPU (binned) vs M3 8 CPU. At about 16 GB ram and 1TB SSD, the 3 are on similar price points. I took an old stock of M1 Pro which was lower price than the base M3 with only 8GB ram.

Thanks for your insight Alex !

Although I'd like to ask you, did you make sure the M1 MacBook Air was not in low power mode ?
I've done extensive testing with my daily driver M1 air, and the behaviour in your video is exactly the same as mine when in low power mode:
-Package power is limited to about 4-5W instead of 10-14
-Temperature jumps to the 50's and gradually reaches a peak in the mid 60's
-Roughly half the performance of regular power mode
I really hope this doesn't mislead people into thinking the M1 air is half the speed of the others when in reality, any task that doesn't use the media engine can expect about 85-90% the performance of an M2.

Cheers !

yo, @Alex Ziskind That C++ sort test is a bit fishy, right? 3 minutes single core and under the second multicore test. Considering there are 8 cores, multicore test can be 8 times faster in ideal world. That would be 22 seconds at best. So where is the catch?

I just picked up a 14” M3 pro MBP with 18/512. Installed windows 11 with parallels for gaming. About 20-25 playing a WW2 turn based strategy game and I hear the fans on and the Mac is getting warm. The game is a little graphic intensive. I think it’s 3D. Any ideas? The game is Panzercorps 2.

Apple's problem is that the M chips are pretty standardised with little to differentiate them.

Apple typically doesn't aim for the best in class, it instead chokes some models to push consumers to (much) higher price points. That doesn't impress many users, it just annoys them and makes them keep their wallets in their pockets.

I buy Apple products about once every 10 years when they slip up and actually offer a decent product at a price that fits what they are offering.

I suspect Apple will permanently move the “MacBook Air” to the Pro chassis while keeping the name and leaving the 1600$ price tag.

Do you want a cheaper MacBook Air?

Oh look, the iPad Pro is basically that and if you buy a Magic Keyboard cover…

I'm finding it worrisome that these new M chips are getting hotter. The very thing we hated about the Intel versions. I know you will say these chips are faster performing and optimized but 100 C is a 100 C regardless of the label on the CPU. This means fan noise is going to become more prevalent.

I think something is not right with the M1 MacBook Air. There's no way its that much slower than the M2 under normal conditions. The CPU temperature alone explains its not running at peak.

That average power is scary good relative to the newer gen both in terms of arch and node process (5nm vs 3nm).

If you could do couple of tests and show efficiency (performance or total time spent / Watt hour or total energy spent) it’ll be really informational.

I think your spot on I have an M1 max with 64 giga memory. I got an insane deal on it new like a couple months ago for only 2299 and I will tell you I have tried that machine up against the newer ones and there’s really barely any difference. Yes the M3 max is faster but not like it’s some silly way not for like almost you know 17 $1800 more it’s thereand I think exactly what you’re doing with it what you’re saying I’m not saying that’s right or wrong it’s marking but I think you’re right and also I think what happened was they made the M1 so good that it’s like the incremental like improvement it’s just what it is it’s not gonna be like crazy better so that’s why I think what they’re doing is like you said they’re spreading it out more if you really want pro performance you gotta go with the max because the M3 pro is not really anything better

The 15" MacBook Air has won my heart. I took mine to Europe and it was so nice having a lighter machine in my back pack. I have traveled before with a 16" MacBook Pro and it's much less tiring to carry all day. The Apple Silicon M2 performance, 15" screen, and comfortable typing deck make it the spiritual replacement to my Core i9 16" MacBook Pro - without the Touch Bar of course. I especially like the compact fast charging power brick.

I recommend at least 16GB of unified memory (mine has 24GB) and 512GB of SSD space (mine has 1TB). If you are wanting a bigger screen, then there is a sizable gap in the pricing ladder (about $800) between the 15" Air and 16" Pro models. And the Midnight and Starlight colors are a nice change from the MacBook Pro .. where you can have any color you want .. so long as it's gray.
