Maximum Cells Per Cluster. In order to determine the size attained by evolved strains, we sampled, stained, and imaged growing cultures in tubes every 12 hours over a 6-day period. We found that cluster sizes of strains that evolved without predators (K1-01, K1-06) and strains that retained ancestral life cycle traits, despite evolving with predators (B5-06, B2-10), remain small throughout the six days of growth (Fig. 3).
