Enhorabuena.

This is wonderful. Ravel makes a beauty that is fragile, but somehow survives the undercurrents of dissonance, which for me makes his work more precious than that of many more expansive composers, and seems to encapsulate our stormy life on this planet. I do love the glory of Handel, and the spiritual serenity of Bach, but it’s Ravel who speaks most intimately to my heart.

There are no words for this piece of music. It takes me on a magic carpet ride every time I listen to it. It reminds me of my father God I wish I could talk to him right now.

One of the most jazziest piece composed by Ravel in my opinion. Beautiful use of dissonance, tension, and key changes inspires myself to compose music.

I've just been transported somewhere else for 10 minutes. It's not often one comes across a piece of music so profound that it can do that. And the emotion Helene Grimaud plays with. Just wow!

I don't know what he intended but I get the sense that Ravel is expressing the essence of Aging, Compassionate Care and Death in this movement. The disjointed piano plods along like the elderly. The first time there is treble fibrillation, the accompaniment comes in like compassionate caregivers. Then there are happy flights of fantasy (Alzheimer's?) in the right hand of the pianist, like butterflies. Until it ends with the final fibrillation and peace.

Agreed with so many of the comments of others on Ravel, this particular movement of this particular concerto, and having cherished Philipe Entrement's version since I was a teenager. The most striking thing about Helene's interpretive style is the marked use of space between her right and left hand. That delay keeps the melody floating high and the romanticism alive- plus the ebb and flow in overall time is key as well. Her dynamics are spot on, but her timing is what makes her take on this piece so brilliant. I think a work of this depth needs to be fully drawn out in this way. Achieving an interpretive skill to this degree is a rare thing. Many astounding pianists can play all the notes perfectly, but few can interpret the way she does here. This is a great rendition on everyone's part. Beautifully recorded as well. All instruments and notes are picked up exceptionally well. I can only believe Ravel himself would have been very proud to here his piece played with so much emotion and innate understanding.
