In find now in my 60’s I am inevitably over qualified and over experienced. I have noticed how much harder it becomes as you age, regardless of the vast capability you could bring. The excuse I always get is someone else is a better fit. In other words they are say 20 years younger and will therefore more likely not challenge strategy decisions made at a more senior level. For this reason I stopped applying for permanent jobs and now just sell my services as a contractor doing short term interim roles.

I have applied for 32 jobs and half don't call back. I am either over qualified or unqualified.

I am an officer in the Army Reserves and applied for a job as a civilian employee at a municipal police department. Passed the phone interview and went in for the interview, arrived fifteen minutes early, and gave my name at reception and the appointment time. I waited until twenty minutes passed the time and asked if HR was running late. 45 minutes passed the time someone came out from HR to see me ... for an exit interview. They told me they felt I was overqualified and they had a problem with my service in the reserves. They had me escorted out of the station and the next day sent a follow-up email saying that they were not moving forward with my application and that if I ever left the Army Reserves they may consider a further application. That was in 2018 when their station was full of staff. Came back in 2023 to get a background check updated and they had two employees in the office, one civilian and another a police officer in the early afternoon. The rest of the place was empty and they had "We're hiring" posters everywhere. I run my own business now and was just promoted and decorated in the reserves.

It did happen to me once. I got called to a job interview for call center where I also needed to be a tech guy after finishing control system engineer. Was already applying and getting to jobs interviews for 1 month before. For some reason in the tech interview they were surprised by my cv, even tested my programming skills, and they called me a week later to tell me they don't think I will enjoy my job there, that I should look for something on developing or research, and they don't want to hire me and then to leave their company in a few months because I find better job. To be frank, I did get a junior software engineer job 1 month later, not sure if it was better payed, but I probably would had resigned my job for that and they'll loose more resources then they gain. I guess it was a misscomunication on their part, as the HR was impressed by my CV, and the guys doing the technical interview saw that I'm actually over qualified and deserve something better.

This is actually pointing to the fact that they are going to make you a low ball offer. Tell them that you are very good for the job and if they insist ask them when did they think about, before that called you for the interview or after? They are lying, there is no point in interviewing you if they think you are overqualified.

Thank you - I had a second interview with the hiring manager who kept stating I was overqualified , so I addressed it. She wanted to make sure I would be challenged enough in the roll. I told her I was excited to learn and grow and invest at least a year in the specific role. It came out later she’s not challenged in her role and it made sense why she was looking at me that way. I greatly appreciate your videos !!!

I clicked on this after landing an engineering job for one of the leading defense companies in the world... AFTER I had watched countless videos on how to interview. I used tons of your tips and answers and landed a job quite literally within 60 days of beginning my search, and I'm not even graduating college for another few months. They hired me IN COLLEGE and I move to Baltimore in May to start the job. Thank you.

I forced myself to go to dozens of job interviews, even though I wasn't necessarily looking for a new position. It really has helped the confidence and my message to prospective employers. I've really made myself into a brand of sorts. That is what I advertise myself as during interviews

I had previously viewed this question as their way to find reason to low ball the salary offering.
